Spring explosions & particles

Post by stink »

Hey guys good work with the engine, its really shaping up.

one gripe I have is could you please spend some time improving the explosions in the game. The current particle engine makes explosions look like wispy, blurry brightly coloured light.
There really needs to be more 'structure' to the explosions, they need to feel more solid.
Think more like this: http://blogs.unity3d.com/2009/07/22/uni ... takes-off/

Same issue with fire, it looks more like bright yellow smoke than fire.

TA's 2d explosions looked more realistic, from an isometric view, obviously this wouldn't work in a 3d environment. But perhaps instead of using the particle engine to render explosions they could be selected from a set of pre-rendered animated 3d models?
Other-wise just improve the particle engine.

Don't want to sound too negative, other than that it looks like it's really shaping up, keep it up!

spring is an engine. Not a game. The effects you are looking at are the effects of the game you are playing. Probably BA.

Have a great evening!

have a video of a 5 year old effect.

The best explosion I've seen in a Spring RTS game are still those from P.U.R.E.

Those are indeed some pretty nice explosions. I remember that Argh wrote his own particle system (or something like that), but it was deemed too CPU intensive to be incorporated into the engine or other games (or something like that).

Anyone know or think the nice explosions in the video are from his particle system?

On a side note, I find making explosion effects and the like to be very difficult. Not that I have any ideas on how it could be easier.

I think the beauty of P.U.R.E.'s explosions come mainly from the sprite image used, and was present before Argh implemented what he called P.O.P.S.

Ah ok. Yeah, making a good explosion image is definitely an art.
