Some questions that are not important to anyone but me...

Post by Mecha Sonic »

OK, I asked this before on the chat room, but didn't get a satisfying answer: Before i installed AVG Free anti-virus, it said I had an out-dated version of Roxio CD and DVD Creator 5 that can cause problems with AVG. It gave me a link to an update installer, but I couldn't install it. It said "This update is for CDR4 drivers 7.1 and above". Thinking there was nothing else I could do, I just installed AVG anyway. What kind of problems will arise, if any?

Also, after I installed The GIMP, it didn't install the Help files. I didn't see anything in the installer about optional Help file installation, so why didn't they get installed?

100% positively correct answers are appreciated.

as far as free AV clients go, nothing beats avast. Gimp help files/tutorials are all on the gimp website as far as I know... I didn't think there were non internet help documents.

AntiVir is my favorite as well, along with Jetico Firewall. Both progs are completely free, no stripped down features or anything.

But I like AVG, and I don't need a great anti-virus software. I was vulnerable for 4 years and never got a single virus. I just wanna know if there's a fix to these problems AVG said it would have.

Studies show it takes an unprotected computer an anywhere between 40 seconds and 14 minutes to be infected by malware by simply being connected tot he internet with the suer doing nothing.

It's not that you didnt get a virus, it's that you never saw them. Either that or you had heavy security in palce, but why that security wouldnt have AV is beyond me

OK, all the security I have on my puter is: AVG free, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, and for my firewall, it's just the OS firewall that came with this computer. Should I get a better one, or will it not matter?

The windows firewall is good if you configure it correctly, but I use Zonealarm.

mecha, unfortunately the free edition of avg pretty much stinks (I say this as a 4 year user). I highly recommend AntiVir ( http://www.free-av.com ).

Also, windows firewall won't help you a damn bit unless you spend the time to configure it, and from talking to you in the lobby I already know that you don't know how to do it. That said, go Download Jetico Firewall. It is simply awesome. Just use http://www.google.com and search for jetico firewall and it will find the link for you.

Also, all you have to be doing is looking at a website with ad's on it and you could get a virus. + during those 4 years you prolly had a lot of small virus, you just never saw them for lack of an AV client.

Well, I would get AntiVir, but it says I need Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, and I dunno if I have that. My browser is called Earthlink 5.0, so I dunno if that's the same as the IE version number. If I can find out I got a high enough version, then I will definately get AntiVir instead.

Also, being vulnerable for 4 years with an outdated Norton, I don't think I got any viruses cuz I scanned with AVG and it found nothing.

OK....

Um, I installed AntiVir and it doesn't seem to be as good as AVG, it doesn't even have an email scanner. I dunno why you think it's better, Forboding, but I think it has less features than AVG. I dunno, I just think AVG is easier to use and has more stuff. If it weren't for the Roxio problem it said it would have, then I would keep AVG instead, but unless I find an update for Roxio, then I don't feel comfortable using it.

EDIT: Also, the update system for AntiVir confuses me. When I go to the update section, it does a search for updates, then it just asks me if I wanna hangup my connection, and it didn't look like it downloaded an update, so I thought "...WTF?". But, I guess it did update it cuz my Windows Security Center says it's up to date. I'm so confused...

All copies of XP have IE 6 or above wether you want it or not.

I also recommend you ditch earthlink and go for firefox for web browsing (earthlink an isp? ISP software such as the AOL 9 software? You on broadband? Google for some stuff, i got DSL AOL working without runnign the AOL programs with google)

mecha, antivir scans everything that your computer accesses, and before you ask, Yes that includes emails downloads pr0n pictures of your sister in the shower, EVERYTHING. It simply doesn't look as pretty.

A unix server doesn't look as pretty as a windows server, that doesn't mean that the unix server sucks... And once again before you ask. Unix is a much better server than windows.

BTW Alantai, earthlink is a 56k provider, also, they rename IE to Earthlink Explorer. It's the same browser with a different icon name.

If you get TweakGUI or some similar-named program, you can change IE's name. And the recycle bin. I call my recycle bin the "Flaming Hole of Death".
