Final Frontier, Space, Maps and Oblivion..

Post by Fanger »

This may have been brought up before, but it is several pages back and not too coherent so Im bringing it up again. Id like to make A (possibly multiple) map for Final Frontier for spring. Now I tried just having the ground be a star texture and that didnt turn out to great. I am now trying the voidwater tag.. however since I cant find anything explaining the fine points of this tag anywhere I hopping someone can enlighten me. When i use this tag the water is gone.. however there is this wierd grey fog toward the bottom of the map, the more you zoom out the more dense it becomes not leaving the water zone, but ending up with the whole map being grey except for any existing land.. now I dont know what this is what controls this or who I can remove it or possibly change the color. The thing is the fog seems to conform to the shape of the map square until you zoom way out, and it seems to be down at what might be where the water bottom would be, but not quite lower perhaps... I dont know if that is clear.. if it isnt I can post screenshots later..

did you check out what the water color is in your .smd? try setting all of the water tags to black:
WaterAbsorb
WaterBaseColor
WaterMinColor
WaterSurfaceColor
WaterPlaneColor

I hope that helps.

no making them black doesnt work, and white doesnt either.. I dont know if another color would affect it, but i dont think its the color of the water that alters it..

By the way, I just happened to be thinking about Final Frontier and maps yesterday, and talked a short bit about it on MSNM with Folcan. Here're my thoughts.

1/12/2006 12:46:33 AM FizWizz FolCan Spring games seem to always be massing games
1/12/2006 12:46:48 AM FizWizz FolCan I came to the realization that there are no proper maps for FF for Spring
1/12/2006 12:46:56 AM FizWizz FolCan low metal, WIDE space
1/12/2006 12:47:58 AM FizWizz FolCan The problem is that players need to be severely limited, and they aren't in Spring

1/12/2006 12:48:59 AM FizWizz FolCan fairly small platforms, a limited number of mexes

Not sure, but i think you have to use a custome sky box for it to work, and possiblie set the fog distance to be a long way off.

that does nothing forboding except make the whole map covered in fog.. and this fog or greyness is not controlled by the fog settings..

Image

see the greyness at the bottom.. WHAT IS THAT!

Okay... in order to get rid of the fog you need a custom sky box... the best way to make a space map is to put all your effort as far as texturing goes into the skybox (need the plugin for making DDSes in photoshop or to steal one), then to void the water, the little "islands" you make should have a custom modelled feature that's mostly underground so that it becomes full 3d... the problem is that the space mods need to be switched so that they are designed to treat water as their "land" and then things like mexes and energy collectors would be built on the planetoids represented by the islands... would really simplify things.

Well........ your prob is that you are using the CorePrime.dds skybox. that gray that you see is the lower half of the skybox, you need to make, or get a skybox that is a full space scene (or what ever you want).

Try it with the one in acid bridge... thats al around i think. Plus it looks sexy.

::EDIT:: Opps... i replaced that one. I just uploaded its old sky box that IS fully space.

Yes, this look very much like the skybox I shipped with CPIA. The grey you see here is NOT a fog or a water plane or anything like that. The grey is painted on the skybox itself. I wanted the lower half (less than half actually) of my skybox grey so you wouldn't see a starfield when looking down on the map edge. So I painted the bottom of my skybox grey. (And getting the proper deformation so the horizon was more or less horizontal was very hard, since I wanted it lower than the middle.) I guess I could upload a full starfield dds somewhere if people need it.
