nuking a few subforums on the FGJL.

Post by smoth »

It has been at least a year for most of these sections, the spring site now hosts subforums so as part of my desire to clean up my page I want to nuke several subforums:

ones on the chopping block:
tower defense

Battletech

Moderators: bobthedinosaur, Lynx, Archangel of Death

Kernel Panic

Community promotion.
Moderator: neddiedrow

Writers forum

Coding

Artwork

You guys largely have not posted on these sections for more than 2 years! So IMO I have no reason to clutter my site since you guys are not using them.

I will give the time to respond about a week.

I'd use it more, but it started feeling like talking to myself in an empty room.

everything is still there but it won't be when I delete it af. Zoombie has gone MIA. I will pm him here and on the forum but I suspect if he cared about his stories he has them saved locally.

I understand z, that is why I am reshaping the forum/site. People don't use it. I will try and do what I can to make the site cleaner. Some of that is clearing dead leaves.

Could you save some data and consolidate it on some kind of archive before wiping the subforums?

Stuff like Zoombie's stories and TD design docs.

NOPE. :)

that would require me writing code to dump threads into text files.

also you act like I posted formal design docs... I didn't

Or save a DB dump, or make the forums invisible only, if the extra DB size for those forums is not an issue. (just some thoughts)

I am not archiving this crap. I have spent years moving the database, images etc from server to server, db to db. It is just a matter of reducing the site to smaller chunks. Not so much opinions of others but my opinion it is ugly clutter that I lug around for a bunch of people who do not even use the site to begin with. I have at least 4 db dumps and 2-3 copies of the gig+ of attachments. In my eyes it is just clutter so a few guys can come back years later and go yeah I made a post about "random thing #34." Most of the development information stored in the site isn't worth keeping. Hell most of the bos stuff is dated IMO bos needs to gtfo. Like I said, i am just carrying around a bunch of crap for people who have abandoned it or they just don't care enough to visit it anymore anyway. Seems like time to delete it and move on.

This isn't like TAU which IS a treasure trove. Mostly it was a few 1000 cool pictures of shit that is either dead or no longer worked on. It is neat to see them but no one uses the site. Mostly it is me talking to myself or getting occasional visits from gundam fans.

So anything not changed since then should be archived, right? I checked kernel panic forum and it seems ok. I don't know much about the way it works... dunno if there's a way to force a snapshot?

Fair enough, for deleting 2 Year old "information", that wouldn't anybody read much on it.

Should have done this earlier, but it is your decision and choice others canno't stop it. obviously you finance it all.

Who would read anyway 2 year old things that most of them are dead just like the majority of the spring projects here...

Does the site work correctly? I stopped visiting because I had to log in repeatedly and not all of the elements were functioning at the time.

I'd like the opportunity to go back and save what I wish, but I don't need any of it and I know this response comes somewhat late. If it is still accessible, I may be able to deal with it later this week.

Oh dear, that is a little rough on the eyes. I would make the default text brighter.

It looks pretty good otherwise, I may start checking in. I think the last time I commented was at least five months ago, on a completely different layout.

I don't like high contrast. It is too much on my eyes.

you can always download firebug, restyle it and take screenshot.
