i changed maxspec to 10 on both hostsdansan wrote:Thank you Fabrice and vbs for trying out different settings, and reporting relevant information here. Some knowledge through empiric research could really help this discussion (analysis?).
@muckl - could you also try lowering the specs-limit (not the player-limit) of the TERRA servers for a week or so? If we could convince the admin of Galdos to also do that (at the same time), we could finally gather some information if spec-limit is relevant to player-host-distribution or not.

Re: Spring has less players
@Senna, maybe, but don't be so sure about that.
This setting encourage people to create games, and avoid them being stacked in a 30 min average running game.
On a ~ BA 60 players community, what's the goal to have 40 to 50% in the same autohost ?
Check all coming-leaving players in #main 1 by 1 during 30min and the possibility to make a / some new game(s) with them and with players already waiting to play.
This is a generality, but players must also learn to be a little patient. Everyone knows that waiting is an act of solidarity for new games, by the fact of more players waiting, more others will come sooner, it's obvious.
I regret to see the no point in jumping into an already full-arch autohost to wait, (without even looking running game) expecting to wait less because it's a running battle...
Whith the 50% chance to unspec at ending.
Why not wait where there is none ?
By waiting in an empty autohost, it allows informing other players wish to play.

+1 FabriceFabriceFABS wrote: It's surely more interesting to have 3 * 5v5 instead of only 12v12 with 10 specs... :/
We should also have a think about max specs ; 6 max specs could be enough (currently 12).

Thanks vbs.very_bad_soldier wrote:I did that too some days ago at x-host... 8 specs though.
I try this... sometimes it works, sometimes not, but if everyone try it could really change the lobby dynamics.FabriceFABS wrote: This is a generality, but players must also learn to be a little patient. Re: Spring has less players
Fun fact:
Some people get very desperate when there is no 12v12 DSD running. They joined x-host today and were baawwing that they cant play because of shitty max player limit of 12 on x-host. They tried to convince people to go to TERA (which is ok for me, I respect the free will).
Because that didnt work they called a vote for a rehost which got through and literally closed the host (I believe some people voted in hope for a raised player count limit). I asked the person wtf why he called a rehost. He answered "because it makes it easier for people to switch all at once". I am considering this very rude behavior to enter a host to call a rehost vote to force people to switch to another host.
Well, I perm banned him... Ofc he called me idiot and nazi and stuff then
Long story cut short: Better restrict the rehost command on your autohost to be only accessible by admins so you are safe from raging DSD addicts...

Re: Spring has less players
Someone who likes 12v12, can you tell me why is it more fun than other big games, say like 8v8 or 5v5? Cause honestly I just can't see the benefit you get from raising the playercount so much, at least if you're playing an already easy-to-defend map like DSD.
Re: Spring has less players
we had that discussion before and smoth raised some excellent points.
in short: pipeline level and many players create the stalemate that allows weaker players to enjoy the game, whose brute force leetness (we dont cap off generals by demanding them to micromanagament-juggle)
So the answer is the guys who stayed for the dsd actually are a protest against a too high difficult curve (for them) and some icing of real warpigs who enjoy the frontlinejob and dont mind some backseaters, as long as they remain quiet and do a halfway decent job.
We could solve the problem, by tarding the gui down.
Or we could really reward players who train, and support people, and keep them in sort of a noobs i trained list. Just allow to point out a Mentor- and if the guy is online, the mentor - no matter which game it is in, gets +1 on damage on every unit.
Sure there will be a lot of ab-use, but if that is made difficult, this whole thing could lead to a competition to get the newest noob to become your pupil. Flash bites with +12 on every shot. :D

Re: Spring has less players
maybe if spring was streamlined for BA, the noobs which continue to pour in would increase and the number of servers will increase leading to a median skill level where they aren't getting killed by the hardcore players who still actually play the game on a long term basis.
Streamline it for BA as a landing area and then from there people may be willing to try new things. But BA is where spring started (AA or XTA before that) and we can definetly pin this whole community to that success. In fact if no one had decided to make Ta3d out of the yankspanker engine no one would be here anyways.

I've been warned about expressing my opinion of Spring = bA therefore i think the reason spring is fubar has become obvious.

Re: Spring has less players
Wow, so many posts and locks and I barely had time to read, but let me try to sort it out for you.
1) Spring is a game engine, similar to Unity or Unreal Engine, with a lot of different games
2) BA is currently the most popular game for Spring
3) BA doesn't have a website
4) BA doesn't have an official installer
What you are doing is ignoring 1) and using 2) to justify a proposal to fixing 3) and 4) by piggybacking BA onto the spring engine, and making the spring website a game website instead of a development one, and focusing on BA on the installer. This is kind of silly, and justifiably the other game developers would be annoyed.
Which leads to the next two facts:
5) BA needs an independent website
6) BA needs an independent installer
Unfortunately, what is really holding BA back is:
7) BA uses a lot of content that belongs to Atari
It's not like Atari is going to sue anyone, but it highly limits the number of websites and people that will give BA publicity, and understandably leaves people uninterested in maintaining a website and installer even if they love the game.
So what can you do?
* Help the BA remake project: http://code.google.com/p/baremake/
* Design and host a website
* Make and maintain an installer
It's really not an opinion, more of a statement that doesn't make any sense. Here is the reality:butcher wrote:I've been warned about expressing my opinion of Spring = bA therefore i think the reason spring is fubar has become obvious.

Re: Spring has less players
I'd love to participate in this but if i do I'll get banned
sorry
edit: I just have to - this topic is surrounded by 3 other LOCKED topics, then two others which were updated today and the remainder haven't been posted in for days or weeks. If you can't discuss spring without locking threads there is no point in trying to figure out why players are leaving.

Re: Spring has less players
I guess there should be a sticky or something with all the vital info you must know before posting another "why spring sucks" thread.
Rule 1: don't use "spring" when you mean "BA". A simple mistake but you may get raged at like you're a total moron.
stuff like that

I don't spend my time trying to figure out of my opinion is going to offend someone or what words offend people and in what ways
i play the game and came in here with some thoughts based on thousands of hours of experience and they locked my thread. I'm probably better off leaving spring anyway, the same conclusion everyone else came to.
