spring versus quake

Post by brw314 »

hi,

i'm exploring this subject a bit more. a friend of mine is an established graphic artist and we are considering some game ideas for his motif and extensions thereof. many of the concepts would fit with "quake", kind of capture the flag, "shoot'em up", and various kinds of rooms to move through. with that in mind, how does quake compare to spring? which is more easily customized or to develop in?

thanks!

from what i have seen, spring looks like it is used for battlefields and quake for labyrinths, or doesn't matter?

deleted smoths post because it was not helpful.

spring is an RTS engine. If your game consits of multiple units moving on a 3d landscape/heightmap, spring can do it. If you want the player to move its character in a fps-style, spring is not good for it.
Also not suitable for indoor levels.

I guess you know what quake is. I have not mad any content for quake but I would think it is more complicated than spring.

Also are you serious?

thank you, that was much more helpful. no, i can't say serious at this time, its a long term plan, dependent on changing plans, and not immediate.

i would want to move characters through multi-level rooms, but there are other customizations, like intelligent stationary "things" hanging off the walls that the user would "communicate" with (send signals to)

the artist is a recognized in "underground" circles, concepts are deeply socially satirical, timely, and strategies would be thoughtful and akin to a game of chess or go

Why does the choice has to be between Quake and Spring? I'd say use the Unreal engine instead!
