Video blogs?

Post by smoth »

I have been thinking about doing a bi-weekly as in every 2 weeks video blog talking about gundam rts development, spring or just some of the cooler things going on in gundam for that week. I could narrate gundam replays or just talk about new features that are in the works. Make videos about how does I get svn and pull down the dev build..

Was thinking about giving it a whirl to see how much interest it could generate. The idea is to post the video and be open to user questions, that way there is some interaction with the youtubers and they can pitch questions out there. I think it would be interesting I could do it like I said, every 2 weeks(possibly with new bits in between).

So what do ya'll think about that? I think it is one advertising avenue we have not tried. People seemed to respond well to my early videos that I posted, I have been watching let's play video blogs for like a year and they generally get pretty decent view counts.. We have videos out there but nothing like a weekly video blog. Spring may have some hope if I can put out some somewhat viral videos. Maybe even talk about interesting mods like kp or knorke's spring tanks.

I hate the current wave of posting everything via youtube videos. Like last time I wanted to install a mod, instead of plain text, instructions were in form of a 10 mins video. Or when instead of reading a game review, I now have to listen to a dreadful nerd dude laughin as he stumble on the main menu for wasteful minutes. It goes even worse, now people film themselves plainly talking to their webcame and call it "reaction to".

So please, some things as till much more convenient to consume as good old webpage of text + illustration + links + soothing layout.

Of course, that's my personal view and videoblogs are all the rage nowaday, so it all depends wether you want to be "in" like all the kids, or if you've genuily interested in delivering your info in the most useful form.

I already do monthly wall o text posts to moddb/indieddb and once I get the gundam site up those plus extra articles will be posted there.

this is for trying to drum up interest.

Don't watch the videos of people doing face time and talking. Those are ego wank. I watch phillyd sure but honestly the shit like reaction to is youtube crap and I hate all of them. Watch x's adventures in minecraft, yogscast or other similar videos as examples. The idea is to entertain and inform. Or even the silly esport postings of starcraft/lol.

Video has a purpose. ESP for action related things and visuals which is why I refuse to do written tutorials for how to photoshop or model.

either way, yes some things may be good in text form but also video is a popular format and changing with the times is important.

well it was a general thought, cannot do only videos of how people play gundam and lets face it, my accent isn't very sexy or charismatic.

Yes! We are in a "market" with a lot of 16 year old kids. They have loads of time to waste and don't suffer from responsibility's like 'generating income'.
Lower the barrier to entry! Get them productive.

yes to the no or yes to hand holding videos?

I agree, right now the most useful thing someone can do for a spring project outside of develop it or the engine is to play it. While most users here forget that they were a goofy kid at one point. I think we should welcome the younglings they have a place here to. To bolster the community ranks!
