Mapconv + Geothermal Vents = Despair

Post by FizWizz »

For the last two days, I have been trying to get geothermal vents to work in Fizzy Lakes, but to no avail. I have tried many different dispersions, I have tried them on both the metal map and on the feature map, at the /8 and /8+1 sizes, by clearing out the feature map in a five pixel square around them, and all sorts of different variations, but alas, after at least 40 compilations, I have not once had success.
Often, geo pixels spawned multiple geothermal vents in the general area of where a SINGLE one should be, sometimes these pixels behaved themselves and reproduced vents dutifully, occasionally a geothermal vent would not appear at all, and so, My efforts to release Fizzy Lakes exactly as I intended it have been in vain.
A couple of times I tried erasing the geo pixels that gave me problems, and placed new ones elsewhere, but the effects were seemingly random, and even caused other geo pixels that produced good vents to go haywire. I have been frustrated to no end, and I swear to all that is good in this world, I can find no source to my problem.
It has been suggested to me that the high number of features on my map has been causing mapconv to screw up, but if getting my problem remedied requires sacrificing other features, then I am unwilling to make the trade.
Help Wanted.

Sounds familiar. On the map I was talking to you tonight, I went from 14 geo vents to 6. Then gave up on that and, WOO i've got 4 working perfectly!!! How many are you trying to do? Maybe you should try a smaller number in more central locations.

I originally wanted to do about 20, but in the beginning of my head-banging match with mapconv, I knocked it down to 6, one for each start position. *sigh* I think I may give it one last go with 2 geothermal vents in the center. Chances are crap, but it could work.

....and if not, just stick one in. Odds are it'll compile and give you two anyway

There are 2 single pixels at each corner in Green-255 on the feature map, but low and behold when the map is played in spring.. on every single spot in each base has the exact Number and place that I put them, except in that botom right there are 5 geothermal vents that show up instead of the single 1 that is placed there on the Feature map.

The geothermals are setup in such a way only to allow the use of LVL1 geo plants at 2 locations in each base, or to use the LVL2 Behemoth triple barreled gun, and do not have the room needed to build a lvl2 geothermal plant at them, thus making the allowance of 2 per corner base a balenced decision.

There are 2 geothermals up high at exposed positions on each walled corner fort , there are 4 forts total= 8geo (in total counting for all corner bases combined), and 2 geo in the center mass metal deposit base giving a grand total of 10 geothermal according to my feature map.

I would love to know wtf is up with the map having 5 spots show up at the lower right when that is clearly not what I defined in the feature map...
I also couldn't not get grass to show up even though geothermals and trees are there in the proper places..

Well, I tried reducing the number of geo spots. Four wouldn't work, two of them kept being misproduced, so I knocked the final number down to two, and it has finally worked. It is unfortunate that I cannot put down the number of geo spots that I wanted, but I'm keeping my source files in case a new version of mapconv or sharpmap comes out, so that I can make FizzyLakes_V3 into the geothermal paradise it was meant to be.
