Microwave Pop-Corn Conspiracy!

Post by SinbadEV »

The Secrets Microwave Companies don't want you to know!

Did you know that you can make twice as much pop-corn, on the stove, with a little vegetable oil and salt in the same amount of time as it takes to microwave a bag! And it doesn't taste like crap... if you were eating the 94% fat free microwave popcorn then it's basically the same thing...

Seriously...

Take 1 part vegetable oil, heat covered in a non-stick sauce-pan at just above medium heat... put in three kernels of popcorn when you think it's ready... if they pop... it's ready... add 3 parts pop-corn... heat, cover askew to release steam, moving the the sauce-pan until it finishes popping... put in a bag... add salt and shake... if you're feeling like it you can also add some butter... seriously... THAT EASY.

One warning... pop-corn expands to like 8 times it's original size or something when popped... so start with like 1/8th of a cup oil and 3/8th of a cup kernels the first time... my pot can handle 1/2 cup of pop-corn... which is about 2 times as much as is in some microwave popcorn bags.

Yeah. We've always popped our own popcorn. I didn't even realize that that wasn't common until you mentioned it.

Homemade popcorn is a lot better, and a lot better for you too. Also, it isn't greasy (unless you add lots of butter like me). Margarine tastes so much better than the shit that comes in a bag on popcorn. Also, for added win you can put cheese on the popcorn. Velveeta for the fucking win.

On the latest Giant Bombcast they talked about the tools they use for their own popcorn, they've got a popcorn machine that stirs the kernels to prevent them from getting burnt and gives more equal cooking for fewer unpopped kernels.

I don't eat popcorn when I go to the theater because I don't like how greasy it is. I might like homemade popcorn though. Thanks.

personal favourite recently is just salt and pepper (just cooking the popcorn in oil makes it just sticky enough)... surprisingly good.

part of the time expense is cleaning the stove top equipment used. having to actually be there watching it pop and taking the effort to actually pop it. vs set and forget in microwave.

True... but your supposed to pay attention to microwave popcorn so you can stop it at the right time... and the "equipment" I need to wash is a saucepan+lid and at most 2 measuring cups.

All that said... a hot air popper works too, cuts out the oil and the cleaning and the having to pay attention parts... so now that you've mentioned it I need to get a 15 dollar hot air popper next time I'm in walwart.
