each core goes down by 0.16 ghz(which may hurts spring) but the quad core would GREATLY increase the speed of my wm2 texture builds so thoughts springites?

That seems like a lot of dough for a 2-generation old quad core, I wouldn't pay to upgrade for that money. On a different note, Sandy Bridge CPU + mobo combos have been steady at around $300.

I have a E8500 in my game comp now... (clocked to 3.6Ghz without any additional fans or anything) but if I were to upgrade, I'd for sure go for a Core i5 or i7... not another 775 socket CPU...

Try clocking it and save the money for a MB, CPU & Ram switch later on...

Don't invest in the Core 2 series. I made the mistake of upgrading from a dual core Conroe to a dual core Wolfsdale nine months ago, and it was a bad idea then. Now I have two 775 desktops, both of which are usable but would require a new motherboard and processor if I chose to upgrade and really aren't at a decent price to power point if I were to build them now.

I recommend going with AMD quad and hexacore processors. I've handled a few builds with such and for price they can't be built. Sure, Sandy Bridge is nice, but those extra two hundred dollars don't buy you enough to matter... particularly with the premium on compatible motherboards.

They do if your actually putting it to work. Clock for clock Phenom II is ON PAR if not worse then C2Q, so it wont be much of an upgrade going to a quad core vs the one he is looking at. The hexacores are rubbish, seeing that sandy bridge is the same price.
