And yes I read the posts made afterwards by knorke, and yet still reposted that quote, maybe someone should think about what I might have in mind that made me dismiss those problems...

AF wants your permission to set you up a BA site on his server.

if AF thinks he has a good idea to get around the usual "no content, site dies after 2 weeks" problem then just let him try out.

AF: just do it.

northdakota2170: i guess there are some things even noobs can do ;) ie make a gallery of screenshots or something

I wonder what technique would be most appropriate for setting up "soon to come" or "I'd-like-to-have" matches.

It would be nice to have an easy accessible site to setup something like "at 8pm EST I'd like to play for 2h some 2v2 matches with ppl of medium rank" or "at 9pm EST I'd like to play Chickens on a big map with 6 ppl, rank doesnt matter" or "enter your name here if you want to participate in a 4v4 tournament Tue morning" etc....
It should be sorted with "soonest match, descending" - like ebay :) Players could later upload replays and flame a little around (like @ replays.adune.nl).

Because that is what I miss most: a community with enough games that I'd like to play at a given time. An easy way to setup small tournaments.

Maybe something like that could bring players to not be driven into dsd. Sometimes I open a new game/join a small game and wait 10 min, nobody or only few players come, then I join a game with more players... this is frustrating and my patience seems to be small.

It could also spur some competition.

If its a central point (with RSS?) that ppl check when they start their lobby (or integrate it into lobby), then it would bring ppl to the BA site a lot.

I don't know if it's doable or if it would work - I just wanted to throw in an idea that comes from personal need - maybe I'm not alone.

The reason BA doesn't have a unit guide and a website are all the same - because nobody is doing it... for the longest time, BA had nobody actually *working* on it. A succession of stewards maintained it, but nobody was making it their priority. Now that's changed and it's getting a real set of replacement models, but that modeling is a humongous task and anything more can't be expected.

tl;dr: if you want one, make one. Nobody else will. And nobody else will maintain it either, or integrate it into BA, so it's all on you.

Personally I can't reliably comment on the true extent of the link between BA as it is now and Bob's prospective project. However, from what I have gathered: rather than a sense of community divergence (asides away from original ip) these two projects are kindred spirits. For example Beherith is BA's maintainer but is also very active in aiding Bob's project.

On this basis perhaps the best idea, regarding this whole website idea, if it does go ahead, would be planning and constructing quality web design and content, but in anticipation of Bob's eventual release. From what I can tell it is mostly a re-skin of BA with core gameplay elements remaining intact, so I would assume that the majority of BA players would have a vested interest in ensuring its success? As such, although unit appearances/names may differ, lessons and tips would be relevant for players of both games.

Having an outlet for the community's collective knowledge in advanced of release would help guarantee a decent level of quality, content and polish before release of the real thing. In the meantime perhaps the site could be treated as a BA knowledge portal. When the time comes change names and pictures where required. By experimenting with the website idea at this early stage (while we still have the luxury of time,) perhaps valuable lessons could be drawn from the experience, maybe some hype could be drummed up.

Key community members need consultation on this idea - certainly Bob and Beherith to note. Only time will tell if the community's vibrant spectrum of beliefs will come together as a clash of storms or a rainbow on the horizon.

The last few attempts to 'just do it' with regards to projects in this community have been utter disasters. Someone in an official place has waltzed in and gazumped or sidestepped the entire process and pushed their own designs or an alternative without even saying anything, or made all the right noises then ignored the development effort making it a waste of time.

I made an offer, the offer has yet to be accepted. When it is I will make a move, and until then nothing will happen. I want to know I'll have support, even if its just asking one or two questions like A or B, and not have to rely on a community flamefest to get an answer.

my advice; dont try to discuss anything BA related on this forum unless its in a pm to a dev or on the google code sight via tickets etc etc.

if i was incharge of BA i'd ignore every post in this forum by any user thats been here longer then 4 weeks since 90% of it is "pros" whining about stuff they arnt good at (DSD, core faction, etc)

so yah. if it counts AF you have my permission to make such a site. GO MAKE post your creation as a patch ticket and nom cookies etc etc w/e

You don't need a gallery right away. Just start with a forum and wiki and get those populated with guides and such, and then when Bob's models are done the website will be already ready.

this is BA forum and links to guides are available in the lobby.

for me, its pointless effort. BA doesnt have rly much to offer nowadays for outsiders not related to TA. i belive all TA fans already know about it.

but hey, if someone wants, go for it.

Perhaps all old TA fans have at some point in time been made aware of BA, as you say. But a more current question, and one which I think is more important to the present and future community as a whole is: are the old TA and BA players aware of the awe-inspiring work currently in the pipeline?

Think of Bob doing for BA as what Blizzard did to Starcraft, but done right (not so much of a sequel as a well judged remake). The main difference is of course that there is not much of a playerbase left over to spread the word. That's why AF is right to be persistant in offering hosting, as every action counts.

Looking back at TA it will never be fair to call it "dead" and the same is true of BA. However, I think that in the current situation the future of BA's legacy will be best kept alive by the continuing support and development of ambitious projects such as Bob's by the BA community. Afterall, this is the very spirit of innovation and creativity, which sprang from TA's legacy all those years ago - which bore all of the mods and creations we see still around today!

Even contemplating this makes me dizzy: imagine a far distant future where countless improvements and releases have made the past so hazy that TA lineage is lost and forgotten in the annals of time itself... ThatÔÇÖs when you know you are overthinking it! 8)

nobody is aware. Even most of the few hundred (?) BA players in the lobby do not know about it unless they read the forums.

There are only so many "old nostalgic TA players" you can win for BA.
Nowaday most people would compare it to SupCom btw, I doubt TA is a strong term outside spring.
