PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
So yeah... it looks like all y'all were right to have mocked my purchase of a PS3... I was away visiting family most of the weekend so I was like "oh, it'll be back up by the time I get back home" but no...
Oh, well, single player Portal 2 for one more night.

Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
Yeah its pretty crummy. Thankfully my entire PS3 gaming lately has been single-player.
Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
Mouse and cursor ftw!
Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
edit: let's just pretend that paragraph made sense... I re-read it and realized that I may have lost track of what I was saying a few times.
I played Portal through with both PS3 DualShock3 and Mouse/Keyboard on a PC. I prefer the PS3 DualShock3.
I found that, because (with few exceptions) the targets don't move in Portal games, the loss of aiming granularity in favour of finer movement control was worth it. In particular, being able to regulate my movement speed and travel in any direction was helpful.
Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
strafing in portal is nowhere near as important as precision of portal placement and thought. If your relying on strafing at all then your playing it badly
Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
When I'm cornering on a ledge and I want to keep my camera pointed towards some target around the corner, it helps to be able to move diagonally to the direction of my camera. Also, the PS3 DualShock3 isn't that much worse at "aiming" then a mouse... I think that part comes down to familiarity with the control scheme and preference... I imagine an expert with a mouse would beat an expert with a PS3 DualShock3... but you don't need to be an expert in either to complete Portal 2 so the difference is trivial.AF wrote:strafing in portal is nowhere near as important as precision of portal placement and thought. Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
Although its not quite the same thing, I'm happy to see someone else prefer a controller over mouse + keyboard at least for an obscure application. I am no good with a mouse, I flail too much when I aim. Yes I'm aware of most console shooters having the auto-lock thing, but I just really prefer the axis-orienting style you get from dual sticks. I'd like to think my mind works well that way.
But to not derail this into a controller v mouse discussion, I will say I'm going to be getting Portal 2 soon, and this recent occurrence has made me heavily consider getting it for PC, besides the fact it'd probably look better on my PS3.

Fun rumor that makes Sony look even MORE bad:
The security they shut down the network to "ensure" was their own, not ours.
Apparently very shortly before the network was taken offline someone figured out a way to make jailbroken PS3s and PSPs authenticate on the Playstation Network as "developers" and along with being treated as legitimate users they could "test" the playstation store functionality and purchase and download anything (including unreleased content) from the playstation store.

Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
So ironic.
Sony says they disabled linux to prevent hacking. Then what happens:
1.) Hackers figure out how to "jailbreak" and put linux back on
2.) Network compromised by jailbroken PS3's
In other words it looks like their plan totally backfired.

No Country for Old Pcs

Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
If you are a pc and give in to the sin of slowdown, you go to pc-hell, which is located in nambibia, ghana or china, and get burned alive. Thrust me on this, i have that on good source.
Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
funny thing is that its true.

It's a good thing I only use points cards and had a different password for PSN then for all other things... but Yikes... epic fail and STILL I have to wait like another week for them to get their "stuff" together.

Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
cmon, u could give Sony a little break in current situation
Re: PlaystationNetwork outage thing...
I am giving them a break... well not so much "break" as "open mockery"... I was still pissed off at them for a number of other things and now I don't have to enact revenge myself and incur legal responsibility for anything.Wombat wrote:cmon, u could give Sony a little break in current situation
Just for interest sake, here is a incomplete (and possibly unfounded) list of things I hate Sony for:
- Killing the N64 by releasing the original playstation to compete with it after working with Nintendo to develop a disk system for the SNES
- Stealing final fantasy 7
- Not allowing me to play PS2 software on my PS3 despite the fact that I can emulate PS2 games on my crappy computer that can't even play spring properly
- Making fun of the Wii remote and then coming out with the Move
- Not letting me run linux on my PS3... erasing all of my save-games when I installed the patch that removed the functionality
- Leveraging the crappy PlaystationEye for the move instead of coming up with a better sensor like the Kinect
- successfully marketing the PS3 so that I chose to buy one instead of buying a new computer
- no file browser in the XMB
- not updating flash so that I could watch most streaming videos
- Not having a secure network in the first place
- Pissing off hackers so that they exposed their networks insecurities
- Suing people for releasing a jailbreak for their console
- Not accepting my credit card because its with an American credit card company while I have a Canadian billing address which results in me having to take a trip to wal*mart to buy points cards to buy stuff on the PSN store (acctually, given that this resulted in my credit card information not being available to steal we'll call this one even)
- Putting tetris on sale the day after I bought it.
- I still hole them partially responsible for killing the Sega Dreamcast (though that was mostly Microsoft)
- Not letting me play mkv videos on the PS3
- Not letting Portal 2 connect to steam without first connecting to the PlayStation network
