NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
If you die as a noob, all that remains is to look as a spectrator- which doesent really help them to master the learning curve (yes, there is one, even in old ta sort of games) - so why not hand them some money for time stayed as spectrator, so they can buy some units in game - and play it as a sort of very small scale world in conflict while beeing dead. Selling five flashes wont make a big diffrence in dsd, the noobs learn to micro, and if you hand them some build-options (allow them to queu there order in in factorys) the even learn, were wat is builded.
Another great help would be some prerecorded mp3, telling every firstgamer, to not bunker himself into the base, to not build for t3, and to not provoke the anger of his teammates by going icefarming.
Lots of work-intensive suggestions, but hey, lets face it, dsds ba drags the people here, and if our magnet (how does it work?) keeps moar AAA*-nubis in the lobby, the better.
Discuss-thing? Certainly.

Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
first law of badsd: number of spectators = number of players
so new players have plenty of options to chat about the game.
zeroK has/had the friendly nubtron widget.
kernel panic has spoken hints. i think they even adapt to the situation?
(just needs somebody recording himself saying make moar solars.)

Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
When I used to play team games I would often share a advanced con to nearly deceased players... I think I had to do this before their last unit actually popper to make it work... and most nubs just didn't even notice that it was there... but still it was fun to give them the illusion of actually still being in game.
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
Some one should write a widget to autoshare an idle cOn to a near dead player I would lol
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
You see, Smoth supports this idea, because he would never ever, even think about joining dsd-games under smurf names, getting con after con, driving them into the line of fire. Nice try, old troll, but this one was too transparent. :D
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
so whenever someone dies, he'll start spamming all his team-members for them to give him stuff.
my experience with trying to help noobs is, that the ones that have a problem with spec'ing ("it is boring"), and rather leave the game, are generally the worst noobs, that practically do not get better. they think they already know how to play, and they do not look how others play. they should not get an easier way to not have to spec.
... if user commodity is most important though, my arguments can be reverted.

Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
hoiju - i know the console generation that has gone soft by playing basically non-skillz games .Cod with regenerative health and autoaim, yes im looking at you, you overrated screensaver with player-still-there-button.
But somehow they have to learn, and getting flamed upon certainly doesent want one to stay as spectrator. Only other reason to stay, would be singleplayer (which many do, by the way, chickens have won this comunity alot of players)

Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
The question is, how to get the people who are not willing to learn, play only vs each other?
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
Secret Society... don't bother inviting me, I don't even play spring let along BA... but if you worked out a system of signs and passphrases that you shared with people if they proved themselves worthy in game... initiates would be able to combine something like the host of the game, the name of the map and mod and the name of the room to determine the correct password to enter the locked games rooms you would maintain.Johannes wrote:The question is, how to get the people who are not willing to learn, play only vs each other?

My suggestion, server with rank requirement or player whitelistJohannes wrote:The question is, how to get the people who are not willing to learn, play only vs each other?
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
I really like this idea. I have a suggestion which is more geared towards fun than improvement (I could be wrong), which follows a similar set of rules.
All currently fighting players have an option in the "give unit" menu to "reserve units for spectators" (ideally only combat, fps enabled units applicable). The maximum number of units in this pool at any one time would be equal to the number of spectators. Each player would be allowed to contribute units to the pool on behalf of the team, up to maximum of: number of spectators/number of teams. Once a team hits its limit it is no longer possible for team members to further donate, until an existing reserve is destroyed. In this way very few units will be wasted in the event no spectators are interested (think 4 peewees per team on dsd) - not to mention the entire process is voluntary to begin with.
From the spectators point of view a "take selected unit" box pops up, if there are any ÔÇ£reserve units for spectators,ÔÇØ currently uncontrolled. By clicking, spectators gain fps control of one of the currently available units at random and are allied with the relevant team (this creates a risk/reward lucky dip style system for both donator and recipient). As well as giving a ÔÇ£front line feel,ÔÇØ fps mode also means that it is very difficult for them to team attack allies. If implemented, this system would provides a fun diversion for the spectators and hopefully create a sense of community between spectators and players (think players giving advice to their spectator stumpy squad in ally chat).
The system would benefit new players ÔÇô they could easily allocate a couple of their units to reduce their own burden of responsibility on the front line. While using the saved time to furiously hunt down the adv solar menu picture or focus on units elsewhere. Good players stand to gain from the system also ÔÇô perhaps a spectator driving your janus will buy you a few more seconds at the front line, or a spectator would provide useful intel by flying about in one of your spare vamps?
I donÔÇÖt believe this idea would be game changing, but it would certainly introduce a new element of fun into BA. Perhaps an expanded player base would evolve around the new feature, the eager next generation of bulldog tank commanders!

You sir, catched fire. Now hold still, while im warming my hands on that rare moment.
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
Your first post kindled my towering inferno... But is it a work of brilliance or a crumbling tower of babel?
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
Cannot give unit to a spectating player and they can control them once a player is dead that is it

Ares, such things comes up often but is never implented because nobody wants to do it. Also CA had a system where players could join their team as spec without units and then later start playing by recieving units. It was never used by players.
Re: NoobMiniGame in Afterlife
That sounds reassuringly similar to my suggestion, although it is executed differently.knorke wrote:CA had a system where players could join their team as spec without units and then later start playing by recieving units. It was never used by players.
I remember fondly, in the old bomberman games after dying you could spawn in a little cart along the side of screen and throw bombs into the arena. Even though you wouldn't be playing to win anymore, the feeling of influence and interaction with surviving players made the post-defeat stage of the game incredibly fun and entertaining - perhaps even more anticipated than the actual battle!
That is partially what inspired me to post and personally I think it would make a fine addition to BA public - although, I acknowledge that it may not even be possible as Smoth points out.
I only want more of a good thing, but a cake is still delicious even without a cherry on top! On that note, thanks to everyone who played a part in making BA the great game it already is.
