Re: I hate failbook
Bull shit it tells people what to like and quality isnt such an issue anymore if you spend more money on advertisement.
Aparently this pays of because people are stupid.

Your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired.
The complete lack of interest in marketing and advertising within the open source community is a great, common mistake which relegates many projects to the margins.Neddie wrote:When done correctly and morally...

A truly necessary product for a person is a product one goes out and looks for cause he needs it enough.
Active advertisement especially with the availability of the internet is wrong.
PC games are the same.
The only moral thing about advertisement today is the addblock gadget for firefox.

Please tell me you know what advertising is, its purpose and how it works. To me, this statement just seems like something an ignorant kid would say, thinking advertising shouldn't exist and everything should be free.Gota wrote: A truly necessary product for a person is a product one goes out and looks for cause he needs it enough.

I suspect my problem is not that there are ads but more that i can not find the good stuff. Not easily anyway. Where is the website that says spring is a must play for any RTS fan? Why do i have to watch 4 crappy and 2 off demographic anime before i find one i like? What are all the video hosting sites and what features differentiate them? How about a comparison spreadsheet of all pest control companies in my area including the price per thing and features.
Free market economics is supposed to find the optimal price through a bidding system. That means all companies must have an equal chance to submit their bid. And that means its someones job to take and compile those submission. Or to put it another way there must be a database of all Pest control companies and video providers and their prices and features. Open source projects would be "advertised" automatically.
I think a solution may also be that "collaborative filtering" and similarity recommendation systems. What someone random person recommends is useless to me. In fact they may be an ad bot and just counterproductive. So much for 10k likes on FB. But if i follow someone who has similar interest and has never "liked" anything stupid their "likes" are useful to me. So does facebook find ppl based on similar opinions?

Crap. Email has supported encryption (to hide message from others) and signing (to prove you really sent it) since, well forever.Forboding Angel wrote:Which by definition of how the protocol works is ridiculously insecure (however, google has done a pretty decent job of helping make it more secure).oksnoop2 wrote:This and email is how i communicate.
This problem is it was all too complicated for all the fuckwits on Outlook and MS never made any effort to encourage these important tools. If MS had made a decision to encrypt/sign by default in Outlook and Hotmail the SPAM industry simply wouldn't exist on the scale it does now. There would be one extra step of obtaining the public key of people and mailing lists you wanted messages from but after that you could simply block all unsigned or unknown signatures and you'd never be bothered by spammers again (except on the not-so-rare occasions when your friends Windows machines get viruses and spam their contacts).
My point is the email "protocol" is perfectly capable of end-to-end encryption but because MS didn't support PGP when it was needed the opportunity for widespread adoption was lost.
Of course I hope nobody is implying Facebook is secure. It sounds like the CIA's wet dream. All communications and relationships easily mapped out and stored with one company. I think the number of police enquiries, court orders and national security letters Facebook must get would be staggering!
Re: I hate failbook
without marketing, you go out there and search for what you need, when you need something, and then get it.
with marketing, you wake up, and you know you need an new iphone, even though you already bough one last week.
at "best", what marketing does is create/artificially heat up markets that should better not exist at all. marketing makes it much harder to find out what products are actually worthwhile, what their real values/deficiencies are, and it makes it harder for small companies to sell their products, even if they were superior to everything else in every way. marketing declares: the user is stupid, we have to tell him what to do, and it makes the user more stupid.
in soviet russia, you fuck up marketing!

Marketing does have some upsides, though. Entire industries have been created or revolutionized because companies tried to improve on some piece of junk that was marketed extremely well and made a lot of money.
Two examples of this are the modern smartphone industry and the rapidly expanding stylish high-end headphone niche.

While I agree that this is what marketing generally does, this is not all it can do. In the modern age, there are far more options than there is time to research and process them independently. A moral use of the same principles behind marketing could be - and sometimes is - to provide information on options which benefit the consumer which would otherwise be difficult or impossible to uncover independently.hoijui wrote:without marketing, you go out there and search for what you need, when you need something, and then get it.

Saying there is too much information for the consumer to process is not the same as saying the consumer is unintelligent or incapable.
Of course, I feel like the utility of moral marketing depends on a number of other foolish or exploitative systems - overproduction, production of shoddy goods, and focused distribution. Without these systems in place, there might be no use for marketing, either for the consumer or the producer.

Re: I hate failbook
Make search easy, having a system where only moral marketing is allowed and punishing bad marketing with negalikes or low votes after being bombarded or suckered. Combining these is the solution. If it became popular marketing would be destroyed.Neddie wrote:A moral use of the same principles behind marketing could be - and sometimes is - to provide information on options which benefit the consumer which would otherwise be difficult or impossible to uncover independently.hoijui wrote:without marketing, you go out there and search for what you need, when you need something, and then get it.
A database that can search multiple tags at a time like sourceforge. It should have a hierarchical category structure and no limits. Like Wikipedia? or Ulike or DMOZ or stumbleupon. The hierarchy system would make "notability" unnecessary.
Allow voting on a 1-5 scale at least to vote over-hyped and bad stuff down. This is easy. Unfortunately spambots would make the vote useless to anyone who doesn't look at your votes specifically.
Combine with twitter & xfire like thing to keep magpies interested.

Just wait, once facebook goes evil, somebody will do a random-like button- and all that advertising money will go nowhere.
Re: I hate failbook
this reminds me of a discussion i had lately, where someone tried to sell me communism as a form of capitalism, where nobody make use of his right to own something (as in: keep it for himself, if he wants to). therefore, communism is not communism because it is already (a form of) capitalism!moral marketing
doing marketing == try to enlarge your market(-share)
if a govt advertises use of condoms to lower HIV % in its population, it is not marketing.
of course you can always find some totally silly, unreal argumentative theoretical universe where your assumption may make sense in a strange way of interpretation, just to be able to say you were totally not wrong. it does not help you in anything though. it just makes you look silly.
