Music Preferences

Post by Panda »

I know that I'm frequently listening to all kinds of music and I'm always on the look out for new music. I'm sure that other people's musical preferences tend to change too. Therefore, I thought I'd ask, what kind of music do you like listening to, what is the name of a band that you think is great, and what is the name of a song that you find to be especially inspiring?

I'm currently listening to rock music, enjoy listening to Nightwish, and a song that I find to be inspirational is "With Every Light" by Smashing Pumpkins.

My taste evolve slowly. I gradually moved from Power Metal to Electro-Indus over years.

I stopped being actively on the new look out for new music because of the disheartening that came after realising that even if I spent 24/7 at it, I couldn't give a try to every band there is, even limiting myself to genres I like.

Which is why I hate people like you who pretend to be on the look out for new music and only list the most biggest biggest well known brand of a particular field.

Yesterday I saw Synthetic Waterfall, an okay melodeath band.

I really like post-rock/ambient guitar noise/fuzz/swamp rock/hendrix.
A band I rate really highly picked at random: At The Drive In
A song that I find particularly inspiring .... Part 2

Zwzsg, stop hating, you appear to be making a lot of false and baseless assumptions about me because of your mood. I say this because your reasons for saying that you hate people like me are vague and the evidence that you present to support your conclusions is internally inconsistent. The question that I asked in my original post is what are you currently listening too, something that you seem to have completely ignored which is part of the reason why you have a twisted interpretation the post. I am currently listening to rock music, like Nightwish, and think that "With Every Light" is an inspiring song, but that does not mean that I don't like to look for new music. I frequently look around for new music because I like to practice singing as a hobby. I also don't believe that music should be so heavily associated with generalizations about people or individuals in such a way either. Doing so involves running the risk of having misplaced emotions about the person and/or the music because a view that is so colored by emotion is not well-known for leading to accurate conclusions. Therefore, zwzsg, if you actually want me to take your opinion or attempted answer seriously, please be sure remember to think first. I have no idea why you're acting like a weirdo, but I hope it's not because you're pissed off because a girl that you dislike happens to like the same music that I mentioned and it triggered negative and misplaced emotions. By the way, don't tell me about it, if I guessed right. It is so annoying when that happens.

well you write
listening to all kinds of music and I'm always on the look out for new music
and then give Smashing Pumpkins and Nightwish as examples. Two bands so well known everybody knows them at least by name even if not listening to rock, so there are hardly new to anybody.

It doesn't matter. I simply stated that I like to hear new music and that was the reason why I wanted to know what you all are listening to so that I could see what's new or going on. The word "new" meant music that I might not have been exposed to. Opinions on music are good too so the questions about what you were currently into was meant to generate friendly conversation.

I simply mentioned Smashing Pumpkins and Nightwish as an example of what I was listening to right now as examples to start conversation. Nightwish is not that well-known where I live and Smashing Pumpkins, while it was once very popular back in the day, is a bit old. A lot of people that I talk to around here don't know about these bands.

Don't worry, I don't hate you personnaly, I'm sure you're a fine person.

It was more a reaction toward seeing one too many time the combo "Let's share new music taste - Overknown band names". It's that pose I dislike, but not yourself.

The last CD I bought was from Khaelys. Pretty much the same genre as Nightwish, except I'd be highly suprised if anyone here ever heard of them.

My negative reaction was triggered not because I dislike Nightwish or because I dislike girls that like Nightwish, but because I dislike when a thread start with promise about discovering fine new bands then fails to deliver in such a disappoiting way.

My musics tastes have drastically changed over the last few years. A few years ago when I was 13-15 sort of age, I listened to a lot of metal and rock. You know, things like Linkin Park, Lost Prophets, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Breaking Benjamin etc. All that sort of thing.

Recently, my taste has widely grown to softer music such as acoustic, indie, country, folk, synth and some new styles of music that don't really have a properly named genre.

A few artists that I've been listening to a lot lately that I can't get enough of:
  • Gregory and the Hawk
  • La Roux
  • Hurts
  • Secondhand Serenade
  • The Band Perry
Personally, I'd listen to a lot more music but it takes me around 2-3 hours to download a typical album of about 100mb in size. If I find a song I really like, I'll try and download the album if my net's having a good day. That's how I usually get into new music anyway. Friends recommend tunes, I check them out, if I like em, I'll browse few a few related videos on Youtube by the same group and if I like more than about 3 of their tracks, I'll chuck "dl this album" on my todo list 8)

I used to listen to HIM, but eventually lost interest. When Panda posted this, I loved the fact they were experimenting with new styles and stuff, I really liked the sound of it, so ended up listening to a load of other new HIM stuff as well. I'm a big music listener, and in all honesty, I listen to any type of music that isn't right at the end of the spectrum such as screamo or old classical.

My Youtube favourites is probably about 50% music and I've favourited 1302 videos over the years :P

Below is a bunch of my recent favourites. This is only really for those of you are really into finding new music, they're quite varied.
Sorry for the long post, I'm a bit of a music freak

I'm currently in a comparatively dormant phase in regards to music due to other problems I'm dealing with. My daily listening has dropped to maybe eight hours, and most of it is in the form of albums I've heard before. I can't really give you a snapshot of my genre interest, what I listen to is molded heavily by what is accessible.

I started in "Classic" Rock, then branched. I burnt out on new music due to the same problem coupled with the sneaking suspicion that even if I searched I'd find very little of interest. Tombom and I argued about that a few times. I'll probably start looking again in four or five months.

Neddie, sorry that your interest in music has dwindled. I think that is a sad thing. I can't say that I really feel like I will never find anything new even though I'm not always that great at finding new songs. I think that a good way to try and keep things fresh is practice picking up on sounds or music that you hear a lot even if you don't always remember lyrics. I think that this is an easier thing to do if you remember that music is closely related to movement. For example, you can hear and feel a lock click when you lock a door, allowing you to use two senses to observe and feel the sound. The same thing goes for music. More than one sense can be used to manipulate it while singing or while listening to it, meaning that you can get your analysis down to fine detail and will eventually find something interesting even if you don't find anything immediately. I agree with Jazcash, though, it is great to have other people to talk to about music if your interested in it.

Jazcash, I have to hold off on answering your post at the moment. It's kind of long, but that's a good thing. HIM is awesome!

You're expectations unrealistic. How am I supposed to know that you would misinterpret my original post or that you think that Night wish is overknown? Plus, saying that you "hate people like me" and that I was "pretending to be on the look out for new music" seems pretty direct to me, but who cares about your misinterpretation of my original post and your insulting actions as a result of it, right? Your statement that implying that I'm taking it to personally shows that you really don't care about whether or not you are senselessly throwing an insult my way and that you consider it to be unimportant that I wrote a response at all, even though you just said you're sure that I'm a fine person. I don't think that you're acting fine at all, but your reasons acting strangely are your business and I've decided that I don't think that it's necessarily a good thing when people randomly tell me their business when they're distressed. I seem to be getting a lot of that even though I'm really not being nosy and I don't want people to think that I am. That's all. Neat music suggestions.

I dont really have a preferred music style...I can potentially take a liking to songs bands and music from all genres as long as it is skillfully executed and is of a certain minimal quality..

never listened to a lot. started with classical music (preferably from eastern europe). then hard-rock, followed by latin music, and now blues (from the very beginnings until the beginning of e-guitar times, one-man-act's only).

there are not really any single songs these days, but some ideas:

Memphis Minnie - Crazy Cryin' Blues

Prison work song

I heard this song while visiting Eastern Europe:

Emiliana Torrini - Jungle Drum

I thought it was hilarious that she punched a dragonfly even though I like insects.

HIM still sounds great to me even when he's singing acoustic versions:

I still like The Cranberries song that you posted too!

I just found out about Ayako Ikeda too. Her music is really pretty.:

This is great, I prefered listening without watching the video though tbh :P

And this is why I love acoustic. Whilst the singing is the main focus of the song, the acoustic provides the sweet chords and backing to give songs an amazing sense of feeling and emotion without being intrusive or taking over what the song's really about. Acoustic covers just tend to have more soul to them if you know what I mean.

I love most the Cranberries stuff, my dad used to listen to them and I just stumbled across them about 10 years later and it just brought back memories and things.

Her voice is sweet, it's just I found it difficult to keep listening for more than 2 minutes 'cause I didn't understand the lyrics. I'm sure I'd love it if I could though :P

There is an interesting story behind this song.
Apparently a new movie used it as its theme song and it got some attention but the thing is that nobody knows who wrote the song or who performed it.
