I hate failbook

I hated myspace... Oh god did I ever hate myspace, but now failbook is rapidly filling that role. I don't like random web shit taking personal shit like what I like (Occasionally I'll hit the like button just to try to support something that I care about (case in point, burn notice)), and using it for whatever it wants.

The fact that failbook takes privacy so not seriously really pisses me off to no end. How long did it take for failbook to add https after firesheep was release, HALF A YEAR?!?

Unfortunately, it's somewhat necessary for me to have a facebook account. I don't like it, but whatever. I feed failbook 0 personal information. The only thing that you can find out about me (for the most part) on failbook is that my real name is Ben Woods and how old I am. Big deal. Sadly, I had to spend somewhere in the area of 2 hours securing up my failbook profile, but there are other areas that still aren't secure and cannot be secured.

Enter Google's +1 button. Daddy fucking likes. I'll tell ya why... I can disable it. I'm not going to, because I like google and google actually manages to give half a shit about privacy. Plus, google actually provides me with worthwhile tools, while failbook provides me with irritation.

Google isn't perfect, but it's close enough for me, and +1's from people around the world on search results is pretty cool. Whether it will be useful or not is another story, but at least google isn't running around screaming to the world what I think is +1 worthy (because you can hide what you +1).

Maybe I like gay porn. Maybe I like watching Donkeys give it to midgets. Maybe I like Gay on Donkey on Gay Midget Donkey porn. If I +1 (or "like") a site, I don't necessarily want the rest of the world to know about it.

I joined facebook to keep in touch with my college friends. Many of which have moved all over. Most people who have local friends don't really need it but for people that are all over the place it is handy to have.

I find Twitter distills down that kind of thing to a perfect bare minimum. Facebook seems to have too much fun playing with the interface and toys rather than just directly conveying content.

if you ask the correct questions, a lot of maybe's can be ruled out.

the sad thing is, if you have anything close to a live, you cant do much about these data whores. you can not use gmail, but whom will you write mails to? you can not use facebook, but whom do you spend your free time with then? other realistic, isolated freaks.

The worst thing about Failbook isn't privacy. I protect my privacy by NOT USING IT (and fuck anyone who wants to find me there, I just don't care). Think about it - your REAL friends know where to find you. Even old friends can usually track you down by name or through your parents. I've found plenty of old friends through "the phone book" - ever heard of it? - and school reunions. No, Failbook "friends" are mostly just "acquaintances" and I see enough of them in my daily routine.

No what really stinks about Facebook, Twitter, MSN, MySpace and Google "Everything" is the CORPORATISATION of information and communications.

Think about it.
* What is MySpace and Facebook except a limited form of web hosting, RSS or Blog?
* How is MSN different to IRC or Jabber?
* How is Twitter not a ridiculously limited form of RSS or forum?
* Why is web search not a Government/ISP service like DNS? What happened to existing search services like Archie and Gopher?
* How is YouTube better than hosting your own HTML5 video?

What makes these services what they are is not that they were pioneers. What they are is rich enough to gobble up bandwidth and market to idiot subscribers who don't know any better - until their user base gets large enough that public/open tools and services can't compete. What they all have in common is once your information is collected by them they basically claim all rights to it and smother it in ads and tracking beacons.

There is no TECHNICAL reason for these services to exist as private empires. If people had any brains they'd run a mile and lobby for their tax money to pay for public hosting and services delivered on open protocols. In fact that was the Internet 20 years ago before corporate bastards got their fingers in everything.

Of all the "web 2.0" pages I only actively only use youtube because it is the simplest way to show videos to others.

How is YouTube better than hosting your own HTML5 video?

1) easy to use.
2) not having to pay for webspace and bandwidth.
3) easily interlink with other accounts/videos. Personally I do not really care about that, i think all my views are direct clicks from ie forum links or IM. But without this linking no lolcats video would have more then a few hundred views.
With private homepages such linking would require linklists, webring, forum, knowledge, guestbooks,...
So I think video sites have a point (well, as much as lolcats have a point)

#1 private companies with proper regulation and competition are far more productive and economic than government owned companies.
#2 Lets take the biggest examples of the so called "so rich you cant compete with", Google and facebook...Obviously your argument colapses compeltely when you check how both evolved.

Most of the things you mentioned did not actually force themselves on anyone, they provided a service people found fun/effective/necessary.
Nobody is forcing you to use facebook or even google, there are alternatives.
What is important is the availability of competition and while having only a few big companies has big disadvantages it also has advantages in terms of effectiveness per $ since big companies can supply their customers (in theory) with better and cheaper products than smaller companies that cannot work as efficiently due to their size.
The internet has a big advantage when it comes to being competitive, thus diminishing the disadvantages of privatization, since the costs of startup projects are relatively low and innovation and flexibility play an even bigger role.

I sense that what you are really trying to say in your post is that everyone should follow your lead and since you dislike a certain service or find it ineffective everyone should "smarten up" and abandon it or it should not exist.

People who argue about governments that should own this and that sometimes forget that the "government" is not some independent money generating body, on the contrary, it consumes money in huge amounts and does it very ineffectively, your money, my money, everyone's money, which eventually effects everyone's life quality.
