In New Zealand there are several different Firearms licences you can get.

An A category licence allows you to have rifles (15 round .22 mag is allowed, for something like a .308 its an 8 round limit) and shotguns (for a semi auto shotgun the max shell limit is 5 or 6 rounds, for a pump action there is no shell limit hehe, hence why Im saving up for a riot shotgun, but all shotguns have to be over 762mm long in total length even with the folding stock folded up). No pistols on this licence. You also need this if you are under 18 and want to buy air rifles. You must be over 16 and it takes a completley clean criminal record to get and about 120$ and an interview with the police.

For a B category licence its a little more difficult. B category is for a Pistol.
To show that your the right person for one you have to belong to a Handgun club for a year before you will be considered. Assuming you get this licence for the first 2 years you must leave your handgun at the gun club locked up. 200$

Now C category is if you want to "Collect firearms, or stage theatrical performances involving firearms" Whatever the hell that means, it sounds boring and costs 200$

D category is a real pain in the ass to get. You have to reapply every year but it is for people who make a living by selling firearms eg: Arms dealers.

E category is the real kick ass one. You are allowed to own and use military style semi, automatic military style firearms: Aks, m16s, Steyrs, military shotguns etc etc. Incrediably hard and lengthly process to get, costs a heap too considering you have already dished out heaps of cash for the other licences but again I remind you it does kick ass.

All firearms here are meant to be registered but it doesnt always happen but most criminals here are too stupid to go through the process of getting a firearms licence so it is quite difficult for them to access a firearm.

Semi-Automatics is a VERY large portion of the guns, there is alot of semi-auto hunting guns out there, are you gonna deprive me of owning a WASR-10? a semi-auto .22? (that's virtually the vast majority of the .22's!!).

A semi-auto is not nearly as dangerous as auto's, the only danger with semi-auto's is youths that wish to wreak carnage on their class-mates so all guns should be locked in a gun safe at all times when youths are around. (which is manditory in many places in the US I believe).

IMHO, only auto's should be banned from civilian use or keep it as highly regulated as it is right now, all Short Barrelled Rifles and Shotguns should be heavilly regulated as well, pistols with rifle cardridges (unless singlefire) should IMHO be banned as well, they can easilly wreak havoc on police forces as well..BUT...criminals will always have access to these.

Erm GZ (hey btw!) I have to disagree about the carbines/shotguns... A short barreled shotgun is like the #1 best home defense weapon. You load the thing with birdshot (lots of little tiny steel bb's) and 30m out it will barely break the skin. Plus the mear sound of chambering a shell in a pump shotgun is enough to scare all but the most completely cracked-out criminals away.

I don't think the concealed-shotgun routine works outside of hollywood.

You can have my .45-70 revolver when you pry it from my cold dead... oh wait I don't own one... They make some really cool (and stupidly useless) weapons now-a-days ;)

I've seriously never heard of these rediculo-weapons being a real problem.

I was actually at the local gun-o-rama (firearms department of big sporting-goods store) this afternoon... Thought of this very specifc thread whilest browsing. Saw my favorite stupid handgun(tm)... chrome version too... Was only US$1500. Unfotunately there was a complete dearth of short-barreled shotguns- none the less cheap short-barreled shotguns.

P.S. Really big [Gub't overthrow'n] automatic weapons are what the US founding fathers intended to protect our right too... It's sadly humorous.

"Birdshot"? dont you mean buckshot or am I wrong? Hell if I opened up on somebody with my 12 guage at 30m there would be more than a little broken skin.

He means bird shot. It doesn't shoot through drywall (doesn't accidentally kill your neighbors), basicly hurts enough to stop anyone not compleatly fucked to hell on adrenilen style drugs, but at the same time rarely kills in a single round. Sounds like the perfect self defence weapon to me.

Heh, good point, they are currently under special license anyway, I didn't mean a Mossberg 500 Police Cruiser type shotgun, but I meant REALLY short shotguns like those double barrel hand cannons lol, well if criminals want them, they will get them so this point is moot I think.

I don't think the concealed-shotgun routine works outside of hollywood.

Yep, you are right...they prefer their glocks, 1911's and their (full auto)AK's anyway, dont forget Uzi's and MAC-10/11's.

Same point as last one I suppose, if criminals want them they will get them so why ban them for law abiding citizens.

IMO full-auto guns under license should be alright, kinda like conceal carry type licenses would be needed, maybe with some extra fee's or paperwork...

This subject always gives me a headache...lol...its hard to find the right solution.[/b]

I'm pro solder, anti war. See when your about to criticize the military ask your self if YOU would be shot to defend your country. Soldiers have always had the crummiest jobs, if you ask me. Nowadays it seems like Some people (You all know who I'm talking about  ) are always bashing the military personal, even though a solders job, in this day and age, is to take a bullet, bomb or piece of shrapnel's so that a civilian DOSENT.

Now i really wish there where no more war's, other then in video games, but i will not blame the men and women who rise to the occasion so i don't have to. i DO blame the terrorists, leaders, extremists, zealots and politicians that create the situations that cause young people to sacrifice themselves.

Im not blaming anyone im just saying they killed more pople who were not shooting back than the criminals did with guns fighting for something that did not make america a safer place, why dont people focus on reducing that kind of atrocity rather than trying to ban guns in the name of crime prevention when anyone who stops looks at whats going on will see bans dont stop gun crime

War, just like poverty is part of the human nature...
The only way to end it is to kill all humans.
give people money and they will take it from others, give them weapons and they will kill each other...

Liberals have a bad habit of thinking that you can just take guns out of the picture completely.

Scenario:

Gov takes away all rights to own firearms of any sort.

Ppl still getting murdered and robbed everyday at gunpoint. At this point liberals think "how can this happen, they can't get guns!". I have news for all of you pacifists... If guns are still manufactured anywhere in the world, criminals will have access to them. They can be smuggled etc etc.

The Worst possible thing would be if no one had guns, which means... If a criminal gets his hands on a gun he has 50x as much power than he would if everyone had guns. What is his motivation not to knock off the local 7-11? They can't stop him. He's the only one that has a gun because citizens are not allowed to have guns. Murder rate actually manages to go up in all cities. Not too shocking.

Now, the flipside. Every citizen is allowed the right to own a handgun (semi auto, and none larger than 9 mil (.22 is bad because if it get's inside you it will bounce around all over the place and definately kill you)).

Scenario:

5 theives decide to rob different residences on mon-friday. 1 theif to every house each night. 4 theives get killed mon-thurs because the homeowners were capable of protecting themselves. Now the 5th theif is rethinking the idea about a robbery.

Yet another scenario:

Man attempts to rob a 7-11 at gunpoint. Bystanders see this and pull their weapons and stop the robbery. No one is killed (except maybe the theif because he did something stupid like start shooting).

People need to remember than when ppl are faced with their own mortality, the chance of them doing something really stupid gets a lot slimmer.

or the 5 thieves get in, people are sleeping. Thief shoots them before they can react because they could have a gun and thief doesnt wanna sit around to find out what happens. 5 men, 5 women and 10 children get killed, 5 thieves are now murderers too.

lol people think that having a gun for self-defense means they cant get shot by the criminal. Or that most guns that kill civilians are smuggled from soviet countries, when in reality they are legally purchased, bought from people who legally purchased them or robbed from people who purchased them legally.

But to be honest i dont care, its not my country, if you guys are happy with it, be. It certainly looks bad hearing about policemen getting shot and stabbed over here due to not having guns themselves, even if the gun murder rate is hundreds of times smaller than the USAs...

The problem with american and world society today is that no one takes responsobility for their actions anymore. Especially in america. If you do get caught you can just drag it through courts for 10 years till finally the supremem court gives it the axe.

Now everything has a label. Depression, anxiety, insanity, etc. The problem extends from the parents. In my home as I was growing up, I got the belt if I fucked around. My parents are very good parents, but they didn't fuck around. If you did something wrong, you got punished for it.

THere is a judge in vermont here that gave a pedophile 60 days in jail for molesting a 6 year old girl for 4 years. 60 days and therapy. Is he gonna learn a damn thing? Hell no.

Most pedophiles were molested when they were young. Fact.

Getting back on topic... The root of the problem is people not taking responsibility for their actions. THe more that is allowed to happen the more crimes that happen. Fact.

When it comes down to it, gun control is simply a bandaid that doesn't fit very well and there is no correct view on gun control. Both have their upsides and downsides. THe world as it is today is in rather sad shape.

Yep i agree, guns are not the issue (canada has a shitload of guns), its the socioeconomic aspects that influence murder rates.
If all guns in america vanished, people would just stab each other anyways...
