If they would have been defeated by conventional methods they would have made it a point to be as bloody as possible and kill many of their OWN civilians. There were many reasons to nuke japan part of it was putting stalin in line.
You can be all "ohh but the human cost was so high" as you turn a blind eye to the way shit went down in japan. No matter what that fight was going to end in mass loss of life one way or another. War isn't pretty when one happens the civilians suffer. Unless of course you are going to pretend england had it easy and civilians were spared.
The only difference is 2 big bombs instead of months and months of brutal fighting where the japanese would kill off their own population.
Seriously, I am all into gundam and anime and shit. hell one day I want to visit japan but you have to be willfully ignorant to not know how they fought and would kill themselves or their own people when losing.
