Holographic tables , and FPS style like Tribes, Battlefield

Post by ufo_jesus »

Today I was watching a video of the new Nintendo 3DS, its got some 3D effects where a camera is looking at your table and it projects a dude onto it.
This reminded me of an idea I had for a holographic tabletop version of TASpring--

add in a more awesome FPS mode and meld it with a commander mode like in Battlefield 2 and Command and Conquer renegade and you will have like the perfect video game, one player controls their team's economy and base from the 3D table, 31 others control major units in the battle with a VR headset and a zapper gun like a wiimote--- or just regular computers for first person shooting with a mouse

There are two 3D tables, one for each team, the table projects the map in 3D with height an everything-- or a flat map could work as well.
planes are projected in 3D over the table. The commander can touch the units and move them, or if this is not possible just use a rgular old mouse to highlight them as usual.

Players can also fly planes and drive tanks ala battlefield or Tribes, or FPS with powerful kbots and krogoths. the FPS mode would be improved to that of a Battlefield game, but even better because the game would accomodate advanced physics and projectile modeling, making it ahead of any other FPS.

I am also inspired by the newer gundam (giant robots) arcade machine i saw in japan. Up to like 32 or something players get into lifesized cockpits and operate the robot, and spectators watch the whole battle unfold on a hidef screen outside. My idea would improve on this with the commander, running the econ and controlling the waves of smaller units.

the main thing would be smoothing out the control of FPS mode, extending view range as well

ps: if a mod sees this, mind resetting my game password? i forgot it, nick is UFO_Jesus

Yes, that would all be really cool, if only we lived on teh Enterprise. I would always imagine it would cool if you had like a large set of small rc units. Controlling them in mass would be difficult I imagine as I can't think of a good interface for it.

on an unrelated note, in team games ive been perfecting my new strategy of building nothing but atlases and kidnapping as many units as possible. grabbing a bulldog or fatboy or commander with 1-3 planes that costs like nothing is probably the most satisfying thing ever, hell even grabbing t1 is worth it even after factoring in the ones you lose from AA

also you know, even though the magic holo-table is fairly unrealistic, i think turning the game into a Tribes/C&C renegades thing would be amazing, just smoothing out direct control-- especially for airplanes. THAT would be unbelievably awesome. imagine piloting your gunship in for the kill or deftly droppin bombs on some fools, pulling some sweet manuevers to dodge the AA. If that could be smoothed out, you can just start a game where people are teamsharing and you know, share the most important units. i guess i can do that right now actually

is there a way to extend the clipping range of FPS view so you can see stuff farther away than usual?

ha ha. The thread was off topic and started in general discussion and now that's it's in off topic he starts to talk about BA (i assume). Whatever i can roll with it.

I sincerely did enjoy kidnapping units in ct when that was still an option. I was always torn if that was being being pro or just a totally jerk. Probably more just being a jerk because i was laughing so hard every time i'd get one. I remember the first time i did it. Some walked ct's "super mech" into my base. So i picked it up and dropped it over another enemy's base. Man, that was funny.

oh yeah i always just think of BA as like the game, not as something inside the engine.

i really like this game i must say-- i remember back when starcraft came out it was sweet but i was like, theres something missing, needs physics instead of hitscan and he original TA was out but i diddnt hear about it for years, and it was too slow to play for a long time.

there are a few holo projection ideas in work, i think a good one involves spraying water molecules and shooting light through them. another is i think like a transparent but solid screen cube.... thing that lights up inside the cube. i think there is real commercial potential for the engine to be fleshed out, i can see this become a real international sensation, maybe not in the US where i am but in arcade parlors in japan or korea where they go nuts for starcraft and even have a TV channel for it and you can hit the PCBang after a night of downing soju rice liquor... license it to blizzard for some kind of arcade starcraft 3 thing

genius move by the way, dropping it over another guys base, ALSO great third option is to get a bunch of stun planes to stun the unit after you drop it in a corner of your base where the other guy cant see anything, then get your commander to capture it. or wait, can you capture while a unit is stunned? i forget if it only works after it comes out of stun.

i should try CT, ive only gotten into BA so far, tried some of that gundam mod and its way cool--- OMG imagine that gundam piloting cockpit game mixed with the gundam mod *drool*

someone should give this to the US military, they already have that AMERICAS ARMY 5000 propaganda game which is actually pretty damn good, might as well build a realistic physics war sim too

are there many asian TAspring players? ive seen like one south korean guy, think his handle is ratio, are there any statistics for nationalities?

also porting taspring to the nintendo ds would be really cool, top as minimap, bottom as screen, opens the game up to millions of people with wifi access everywhere + microphones and cameras for trashtalkin'... also improved screen drawings of private parts!
