Best spring mods?
Hi!
I just wanted to ask the forum what their favorite spring mods were (always looking for suggestions).
Please note that I don't include TA-derived works as free. Sorry, i'm just a bit paranoid with legality. And yes, other people have tried to convince me as well, so don't bother XD XD.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Cheers,
xman15

Re: Best spring mods?
Best is subjective but my personal favorite after Zero-K is Spring 1944.
You should check out pretty much everything on this page: http://springrts.com/wiki/Games
Those are more or less all the actively developed and more or less in a state games.

Re: Best spring mods?
No such thing as the "best". There's no way to quantify and measure "bestitude". Please just give all the games a try.

Depends on what you want. Realistically, *none* of the non-TA mods have a large playerbase. The only game you can consistently get started in the lobby is Balanced Annihilation.
CA is gradually excising the last of their TA-derived content and rebranding themselves as Zero K. ZK is the non-TA game that has the largest player base, and is actually my personal favourite project on the Spring engine.
Kernel Panic doesn't have a consistent playerbase, but it has some good single-player content and is designed to be so easy to pick-up that *everybody* knows how to play it... as a result, if you idle in the lobby with a KP game open, you'll probably draw a few players (unlike the more complex games that people are more hesitant to jump in and try).
Then there's Spring 1944, which is probably the most complete and popular game that has completely eschewed the TA economy and easthetic.
The other games like Gundam, EvolutionRTS, Cursed, etc. are good games, but they're hard to get started on the lobby... this is a chicken and egg problem, of course - they have no players, so they get no players since new players have nobody to play with. A sad reality of multiplayer gaming.

Re: Best spring mods?
Thanks for the responses guys!
I agree with KP, 0K, and S1944: they're all very good games.
Pxtl, you're absolutely right. I've tried to find players to play against for a lot of different mods, but I always end up with like 20 battles of BA and then 1 of s1944. Nothing new ever pops up.
It really sucks for gundam, because their idea of combating robots was the same as the combat mechs in conflict terra. I'm not dissing CT, I think its a great game (which is my point exactly). But CT gets the audience that gundam would be getting.

SUCCESS!
As you can see by my chart ct has become a rapid success thanks to Gundam?
Re: Best spring mods?
Lol op thinks gundam and ct are the only mecha related spring games.
Aw yeah

Also a sad reality that the entire lobby system is convoluted and annoying for most people new to Spring so quite a lot of new players don't even get as far as figuring out how to join or make a game.Pxtl wrote:The other games like Gundam, EvolutionRTS, Cursed, etc. are good games, but they're hard to get started on the lobby... this is a chicken and egg problem, of course - they have no players, so they get no players since new players have nobody to play with. As far as depth and complexity go, I feel that S44 completely outstrips the other games on the engine. You may encounter 2 problems when trying to find games however: The first being that there are not a huge number of games up at any given time, the second being that S44 has a community of pretty experienced players (Godde, JAL, Yuri etc) and you may have to put up with getting stomped for a few games while you get to grips with the gameplay. Please do not let that put you off, it is a fantastic game and very rewarding to learn.
Gundam is a really great 1v1 I think, with some micromanagement nothing like other Spring games (<3 Char), and very shiny art assets.
The Cursed is, imo really cool, but possibly the single hardest mod for me to get a game of, I literally have to spam channels and pm people to get a game up.
One thing I strongly suggest to you is joining the chat channel for the respective mods you wish to play, and letting people know you are up for a game. You may also want to join the Spring Mumble server (feel free to drop into the RoX channel) and ask if anyone is up for a game. I, and no doubt several others, would be happy to talk you through the basics/some more advanced stuff in whichever game takes your fancy.

Update: We're done now!Pxtl wrote:CA is gradually excising the last of their TA-derived content and rebranding themselves as Zero K.

Is this any better? Also a sad reality that the entire lobby system is convoluted and annoying for most people new to Spring so quite a lot of new players don't even get as far as figuring out how to join or make a game.

Re: Best spring mods?
I just realized how much of an idiot I am.
I didn't realize half the people who responded were spring mod developers!! (Doh!) SORRY!!!! D: D: D:
Then again, I did say all your games are awesome, so hopefully it goes over pretty well XD XD
Actually, midknight, I think your lobby is quite good. Zero-k does a pretty good job when it comes to that. Also, I'm quite glad that you've excised all the CA content, as hopefully other legal-paranoiacs like me XD.
SpikedHelmet, I agree with you as well. In fact, I tried to set a game up on Spring so that a couple of my friends and I could play (this is hilarious XD). First, we thought we had to register on Spring aka on the forums and stuff. But then we realized thats not needed, just a username and a password XD. So then I make a private game for just me and my friends. At first, one of my friends cant get in because he downloaded the wrong mod. Then, when I start the game, I realize that this map has only 2 spawn points and there are 3 ppl playing! SO I have to dl a DIFFERENT map, START the game over, and wait for my friends to get in. HOWEVER, one of my friends gets repeatedly kicked from the server! and when I let him in manually, the game crashes! Eventually, after about 15 minutes of this we just quit Spring.
pintle, thank you for your advice! I appreciate the fact that there is a friendly and vibrant community on Spring!
One more thing: I have played both gundam rts and conflict terra, and I have found both to be compelling and engaging games. SO BOTH GAMES ARE GOOD :)
Cheers,
xman15

Re: Best spring mods?
Nah you won't offend anybody that easily.
Especially because you will find that a lot of work is shared across games, and a lot of game devs work to help each other out. There is a lot more shared effort than competition.
Besides which, truth be told, I don't think that there is a single bad spring game in development. There are a lot of different gameplay and art styles around, I would recommend taking some time to try them all out.

Now you're talking! Just hope the functionality matches its design ^_^MidKnight wrote: Is this any better?
Re: Best spring mods?
Nobody mentioned me, although i developed the original Annihilation, before it totaled. But hey, thats okay, i can live with that, even Chris Taylors Annihilation is more famous.
Also OP trying to roll some exp trolls into a pitfight is sort of hopeless here, but nice try, im sure, in another bord it will work out for you :)

Re: Best spring mods?
someone explain to me why using medieval swords image in sci-fi games is so popular.
Re: Best spring mods?
Society has trained us to understand that crossed swords mean fight or battle.

In an open source community-based project, if there is something you don't like, you contact the developer or team through whatever appropriate communication system they have (i.e., open an issue on the developer website) and usually provide a replacement solution (in this case, a new graphic).
