What would you think of making the features crushable by flash/stumpy/etc. strength? They look nice, but I'd prefer to minimize their gameplay effect to play as much like the original.

Why not get tfc to just raise those unit's crushstrength? In evo my tanks run over them and my units only have crushstrength of 20 (exactly what is needed to mow down spring default trees).

I don't like the palm trees in the desert. I've never seen vegetation grow like that it just doesn't look realistic and actually breaks immersion for me over V3. I run the game on lowest graphics settings, so I don't have shadows and everything looks like crap basically, so I grant that it's possible it might look more realistic with shadows etc turned on.

Of course making vegetation look realistic is an art(as attested to by the multi-million dollar industry for that) in itself but since the whole point of this update was to add it, I have to say this is the only time I haven't been overly impressed by your map work.

Anyway just my 50 cents, everyone else seems to love it.

Roll with the times man, and get a better gpu if you want stuff to look better. There is no free lunch. Also, better looking vegetation is usually higher poly/normal mapped, thus requiring even better gpu's.

The main point of the update was not the features, but the SSMF.

Well, the features are there whether they are the main point or not. And I agree that the plants in the sand look out of place, though looks are not so importan to me - I'm more concerned that the map itself might not be as good as the original because of them. If it was an SSMF only update, everyone could agree that this is the version to use.

Why would there be plants when there is a water source nearby? What with all the grass on the hills and all, I can see how you would be confused.

I play on my laptop, so there is not much I can do about it unfortunately.

From what I can tell the green areas of the map are actually mountainous, so probably the soil there is too thin for trees to grow. If not then there should be trees everywhere over there. Anyway that is more of a beef with the original design.

Really the original with water was fairly realistic, sand on a seabed is realistic. But it does not look realistic when you remove the water. In reality grass would grow even in the grass(in such a climate) so you would have lots of grass clumps in the desert or even a firm grass covering. Only takes 2-3 months for an area like that to be covered in grass after it is drained of water. Look at the parts of land formerly submerged under the ural sea for instance. These things make this map in feel awkward to me but sure maybe it's some alien planet where they don't have grass.

so i heard you like grass...

I think what looks a bit strange is that its unusual to have palm trees near a cliff unless the cliff is a coast line. So maybe move the trees more into the open?

The sea was at low tide; it flooded the basin at high tide, preventing the grass from growing Image

Heh, something about this game just brings all the aspergers people together. This game and Radiohead.
If the basin was flooded each day, there definately would be no palm trees growing in there. Palm trees != mangrove trees.

Can we tackle the tectonics of the penis shaped rock formations and the incredible symmetry across the whole map next?

Word. There's enough phallic imagery in Spring online without height maps having that too.
