The other reality is a story told by one character to the other. The reason for the obscurity in the fantasy becomes clear as his motives are revealed. Once you reach the ending there is one clear story (and its not the fantasy).

I doubt its worth watching 2 hours long movie just to see a twist like in inception ending.
