Good Brew Recommendations

Okay from what I've read and have been preached to by some local beer enthusiasts this stuff is the highest rated beer in the world, but alas I have not had any (it supposedly very hard to come by): Trappist Westvleteren: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/313/1545

I am by no means a beer connoisseur but I'd like to see what other people recommend, either from their parts of the world, or others.

Some regional beers I've liked in the past:

• Arrogant Bastard Ale from Stone Brewery: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/92
  Henry Weinhard (brewery)- Average rating Pacific North West company
  New Belgian (brewery)- Slightly overated, but never the less good Colorado beer
  Blue Moon (Belgian Style)- Closest to domestic beer that I really like, I think they are now owned by Coors (yuk).
  Tecate - (actually Mexican domestic) for feeling casual, just add lime or lemon for a nice hot summer day.
  St Arnold (brewery)- A decent Texan company with some nice seasonals (Oktoberfest is good).

From non US:

• Guinness - of course...
  Spaten (brewery)- I like their 'Optimater'
  Blanche de Bruxelles - very good Belgian
  Weihenstephaner Vitus - kind of flowery, but pretty awesome treat

There's a English brown ale that was highly recommended to me, I just can't remember the name. I need to try that.

It's not a beer but there's this little known local liquor produced in my university town called Jägermeister.

Best cost-benefit ratio if you want to get drunk (~5-6 Ôé¼ for 24 bottles)

The quality is much better than expected even though its eastern german beer.
They just dont make advertisement and dont let you pay for it.

And "beer experts" who dont like it are drunkards anyway.

Yeah, they bought up the Feldschl├Âsschen brewery here. The beer is known as the cheapest garbage you can get drunk with, even the CEO of the company that makes it hates it.

I don't drink, but the delirious elephant logo does look pretty cute and it reminds me that beer can make you have a beer belly.

When tasting beer you don't have to get smashed. Wine tasters usually spit there wine out between all the samples, (which should not be done to good beer!), but tasting isn't really the same as drinking to get drunk. It's good to have nuts, cheese, apples, crackers chocolates, things that can serve as additives or good comparisons to the flavors.

I was a brewer for a few years in a micro brewery. If you liked Guinness, I really strongly suggest you seek out and try any "real" (non pasteurised/carbonated/nitrogenated) stout or porter. Black Sheep are a pretty strong brand, I can imagine Riggwelter is not too hard to get hold of. Also, despite being from the region, don't let anyone tell you Newcastle Brown is good english ale. It is cheap sulphurous drunken-juice and nothing else.

Spaten is an excellent German beer. I highly recommend it.

@pintle, seconded, newcastle is awful donkey piss with a morning breath aftertaste.

i would recommend Tyskie, my fav beer. won The Brewing Industry International Awards twice so u shouldnt complain i think.
