If you can find a few hours and especially if you live in the USA or the UK I suggest you watch a documentary called "Trap" by Adam Curtis.
Very interesting and intelligent look at what modern freedom means, how it is being implemented in real life and presumable where it all started.
Its devided into 3 chapters all available online for free.

The film is structured and gives the feeling of a plan or structure to the events cause it shows them one by one within the confines of a short mini series, but what I personally get from it clearly is how chaotic events are and how we will always be unable to grasp the roots of events, doomed to apparently trust the "collective mind" of our society to figure things out for itself.
Somehow we humans are lead by the random actions of ourselves, individuals, who do not grasp the bigger context of their actions or thoughts, thus making all attempts to rationally control our own destiny seem so laughable..
Very interesting

Re: Very interesting
It is similar in the timelines presented but the topic is very different.
Both mini series, even though include a lot of material and are very interesting are still simplistic.
There is no word about the influence of industrialists and corporations over the decision making of western politicians, for example.

There's also no mention on the effects of media on "negative liberty". The idea that everyone can choose whatever they want still isn't "true freedom", because what they want can also be manipulated.
