Re: Movie recommendation
was cool, watched whole, but not something i would recommend to anyone. slow and mostly boring.
Re: Movie recommendation
I think Charlize Theron was a bad cast...She isn't a very good dramatic or expressive actress.
Re: Movie recommendation
i thought eastern promises and a history of violence were pretty decent with viggo
and trademark, you know, the numbers do end up working out in the end because its not like DSD where you can just watch the same movie over and over and over again
the movies that tend to get the highest scores on RT tend to be documentaries, indie films and film festival winners, rather than anything produced "hollywood" (although once in a while that happens too)
for fun, i challenge you to find a -bad- movie there, with a score of 90 or higher.... and of a genre you like, so that you can't dismiss just because it doesn't interest you specifically :O

Re: Movie recommendation
I find RT sometimes too harsh. I always try to look for the movies with "deeper" sense but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy some mainstream bullshit like "Independence Day" (61%) or "Scary Movie" (53%). Yes, its mainstream. But I still enjoyed them. Probably on a different level than "Dogville" (why the hell is it only 70%!? This movie is freaking awesome) or "Br├©dre" (89%) but nevertheless. RT says "Scary Movie" is bad and not worthy of my time. This doesn't correlate with my own experience.KaiserJ wrote:i thought eastern promises and a history of violence were pretty decent with viggo

Re: Movie recommendation
i won't disagree with your point mightyone, its a good one
i guess i kind of think of it less like a grading and more like a metascore... for instance, a 53% doesn't necessarily mean its a waste of time, it just means that it met 53% of general approval... i mean, i liked scary movie, but i doubt that my mom or dad or granny would like it... so perhaps the 53% isn't out of line, compared to a movie that got 100% like toy story which i personally don't think is as funny as scary movie. i can appreciate that if i were to pick a movie for a big room of people of various ages and backgrounds, toy story would be a much better choice than scary movie (or am i wrong?)
i still figure anything with a high score on there will be a great movie; and i will defenitely agree that the style of rating makes it so that its not the be-all and end-all... there are still plenty of movies on there that i would really enjoy without all that great of a score
DSD for me is more like people who like movies like transformers or hollywood crap. is it the best, the most fun, the best produced? hell no. BUT, it's popular, its a fad, so everybody hears about it... just like probably everyone reading this thread ended up being given the matrix on dvd because we like movies and are interested in computers and mindfuck.
edit: t'mark... find me a bad one, these are all comedies with a score of 97% and above. be specific, i'm interested, because i thought all of these that i've seen were very good.

Top Movies Science Fiction & Fantasy
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/besto ... ategory=14
imo that list is useless. Not because the movies are rated wrong but putting Toy Story, Dr. Strangelove, Terminator on the same list makes little sense. All good movies but does it help with deciding which one you should see? No.
Usually I want to watch something that fits my mood. Just a good/bad rating does not help me with that. blabla Tags and keyword seach of imdb is fail too. blablabla
I'd like to see something like this:
you have a + shaped diagram thing:
the x axis reads
funny <---> serious
the y axis reads
^ action
|
v calm
and you just click somewhere ie bottom left: funny&calm, it would propose Mr. Bean

Re: Movie recommendation
well i do read the descriptions and a few individual blurb reviews XD
knorke maybe you're onto something there... reviewing a movie about how it made you feel... then adding said review to a database... then, when you feel like watching something, you can put in criteria of the sort of thing you'd like to see...
yes, i like this idea a lot. im not sure that two dimensions will really do it though, might need more criteria for specificness (after all, thousands of movies made every year)

Re: Movie recommendation
I really liked A Beautiful Mind. I'm aware it's inaccurate but that doesn't mean it's not a great movie.

horrible list, most of those arent even comedy... if it has few jokes, it doesnt mean its comedy genreKaiserJ wrote:edit: t'mark... find me a bad one, these are all comedies with a score of 97% and above. be specific, i'm interested, because i thought all of these that i've seen were very good.

here is what a true comedy is. and you can see it has only 55% score. and this should be on the top of comedy movies list. if you think otherwise, you suck.
Re: Movie recommendation
I rcently decided to find awesome animated films...Wat i did was google best animated film for adults and went through several "top x" lists and compared them.
This worked great for me.
The point is to find reccomendations of people who's taste in movies is dimilair to yours than youll enjoy most of their suggestions.
Sometimes reading the review helps as oppose to only looking at the score.
Here is a website that has pretty good recommendations imo.

Re: Movie recommendation
i only sort of suck; i liked that movie a lot, but its not even my favourite mike myers movie (waynes world 2)
after some consideration my #1 is probably http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/billy_madison/ which has a score of 44%
schtop looking at me, schwannn
however. i'm still sticking with my original point: if i need a movie worth watching, i feel confident that i can pick a movie from the lists on RT, and if it has a great score, and a glance at the reviews seems to indicate something i'd like, then i can't go wrong.
because, although i will 100% concur that as a "best comedies" list, it falls flat, every single one of those movies is at least watchable regardless of a questionable selection for genre, provided you read the review and realize what you're getting into. if it looks crap, just go to the next one.
of course this method can glitch. but then again, since im streaming the movies, i can just flip over to something else without too much headache... very little time investment
(this is just opinion ofc. as i said, i watch a lot of movies... probably too many... in order to see something new, i generally gotta go to the lists, because everything i've heard of, i've already seen. gota probably knows what im on about)
edit: as a "best of all time" gotas list is far better than the one on RT

Re: Movie recommendation
LoL at shawshank being #1...
Imdb ratings are too "simple" for something as serious as trying to decide the best movies in cinema history.
What is so revolutionary about that movie?
revolutionary Cinematography?no
revolutionary Special effects?no
Even the performances are not ground breaking because there was no room for too much amazing emotional acting...
the recent Natalie portman's Performance in black swan can imo be called amazing but Shawshank is all about story which is rooted in the book...
Of course the ratings are strongly biased toward american cinema but its hard to find a list that isnt(at least when searching in english).

Re: Movie recommendation
13 pages and not 1 mention of Interstate 60. I'm convinced it's probably the only cult movie that doesn't have a cult following. It appears that for some reason this movie never received wide distribution or advertising. It's probably one of the biggest PR fails in history yet it's also one of the best movies. You must see it!
I'm too lazy to write a review so here's one I stole earlier:
I'm too lazy to write a review so here's one I stole earlier:
IMDB wrote: Once in awhile there's a film that comes along that is amazingly fresh in it's idea. Interstate 60 is one of the best movies I've seen recently. I saw in a rental store and there was only one copy they had. I didn't see it in on the shelves of the other rental chains I usually visit several times per week. I debated whether or not I should even rent the movie. But, it had Christopher Lloyd in it...so it couldn't be that bad.
I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie. It's fun and utterly different than what I was expecting it to be. Interstate 60 cannot be classified into a single genre. It is many genres, from fantasy to comedy, to romance, to drama...and back again switching between these and so much more.
The script is very well written, with many memorable lines of intelligent dialogue. There are several notable cameos by high profile actors such as Michael J. Fox, Ann-Margret, and Kurt Russell. All of their performances made use of their stellar acting abilities. Another must see role was played by Chris Cooper.
Interstate 60 should really have had a wide theatrical distribution. It has the look and feel of a big budget movie, and surely has a wide ranging appeal. A lot happens in this movie and that is a good thing! It's a shame that a lot of people will probably never see or hear of the movie. If you can find it around you should definitely rent it. You also couldn't go wrong with just buying it, I know it is next on my list of movies to buy for my personal collection. I give this exceptional movie a 10 rating out of a possible 10!
