It is severely tempting for me to write an SMF editor so I can modify my maps without recompressing the texture every freaking time!

That looks pleasantly simple. Cube-style in-game map editor anyone? Or go a step further and try and port Cube maps to Spring (cubeengine.com).

Once I finally polish SharpMap you won't have to recompile everything again.
