Re: Christmas sales on Steam
I've always been a bit iffy on buying games that I won't have a hard copy of. (WHAT IF STEAM BREAKS DOWN?)
But I'm looking at HL2's AMAZINGLY CHEAP PRICE.

Might get burnout paradise.
Re: Christmas sales on Steam
You can play steam games offline so unless you are worried about steam going offline for good you needn't worry... even if they do they will probably just be bought out by google and keep providing services anyway.hamsate wrote:I've always been a bit iffy on buying games that I won't have a hard copy of. except that any independent can put their wares in the Android Market and that they have provided unlimited free access to a number of their services to independent and open source projects (example google code)... unless they have a very dramatic shift in corporate vision they are very benevolent and indie friendly dictators indeed...dizekat wrote:omg. well with google the problem is they have this giant company mentality so i'd think they won't be very good for indies.SinbadEV wrote:You can play steam games offline so unless you are worried about steam going offline for good you needn't worry... even if they do they will probably just be bought out by google and keep providing services anyway.hamsate wrote:I've always been a bit iffy on buying games that I won't have a hard copy of. Re: Christmas sales on Steam
Indie friendly is something different from just making a web interface to put your stuff online. With Steam as it is now there are people in the loop, and there is some quality control, and they really do the marketing. An online store to which anyone can submit anything with minimal reviewing is, to the contrary, rather indie unfriendly place as far as sales go.SinbadEV wrote: except that any independent can put their wares in the Android Market and that they have provided unlimited free access to a number of their services to independent and open source projects (example google code)... unless they have a very dramatic shift in corporate vision they are very benevolent and indie friendly dictators indeed...
Re: Christmas sales on Steam
the way I see it if I pay $60 for a hard copy of a game I am purchasing the right to play that game in addition to the right to transfer that right to a third party (aka sell my copy of the game) for the life of the media on which that game is printed.
If I buy a game on steam I am paying for the right to play that game for the life of the company I purchased the game from, which is no more or less guaranteed that the media in the first scenario... I am however no longer able to transfer ownership of this game so I expect to pay the difference between the retail version and the price I could receive for selling the game (minus the cost of physical distribution), so to me that usually means I would pay 50% of the retail price for a digital copy of a game.
Unfortunately some game publishers haven't figured out the existence of this disparity of value and expect me to pay the same as the physical version minus the cost of physical distribution... so these are games I will still buy hard copies of... or wait for them to go on sale on steam so the value I assign to them is greater then or equal to their price.
I don't really worry about steam ceasing to exist because as an intelligent human I know that within a week of steam going down someone, somewhere, will work out a way for me to play the games I got on steam for free... and since I don't claim to own the right to transfer ownership for digital copies I don't feel that I would have lost anything in the process.

Re: Christmas sales on Steam
The boxed copy requires Steam for activation. That's just how Valve rolls nowadays.
Re: Christmas sales on Steam
