Possible GPL mod for spring?

The game Warzone 2100:
...
The Warzone 2100 ReDev Project aims to continue the vision of Pumpkin studios started in 1999 with the game Warzone 2100, Which was closed source until Dec 6, 2004 when it was let out the doors for the first time under a GPL license.

That is actually professional quality content just waiting for someone to use it...
I haven't tryed it yet but the units seem to be 3D. Maybe that can provide a good mod for Spring free from copyright issues? (even though there are a few under way after some effort is made to substitute some things)

Maybe we could even have TA Spring and Warzone Spring :P !?

Wow. I didn't know it was released free. Amazing! I played this rts when it was first released, and most of the time those games had a very siege-eque feel to it.
The resource system was a little bunk, although, if I recall correctly not that different from TA. I think it's major fault is the inability to quick change it's content, as I never remember there being much of a mod community.

The game wasnt that successful. There was no expansion pack and no sequel.

I bought it back then and played multiplayer on the internet just a few weeks ago, and, what can i say, it totally sucks.
You just rush the best tanks with the best components (hull, gun, drive) and mass them. Thats all, no tactics involved, scince the design of the units was only limited during the sp campaign, where you were only provided with new, aka statistically better, designs every next mission.

So in short, if you were to convert this game´s content to TA, minus the "design" feature, you basically had a OTA with no tactics, no commander, no ships, no real planes (just vtols) and no artillery battles.

Scince the units of WZ are not technically better than our TA:Spring ones we would not get anything new.

But there might be some content there for the pillaging. After all, many consider the TA content in Spring to be of possibly doubtful legality.

You probably missed the part about it beeing GPL, copyright free!? The single most important thing about it, anyway.

Indeed. If Spring was made to suport dinamic design of units ingame, it would be sweet. That, however, would require a new GUI which is better not be hoping for.

What could be done was mount a serie of units and create a mod with it, properly balanced in Spring, that is, not necessarily balanced as the original game which might not be suitable. Or something...

I dont fear lawyers, scince i am becoming one of them.
I modded a few other games, using, as you put it, "uncertain" content, and i am still not imprisoned or bankrupt, and I know why.

As for the round building with the four spikes in the middle, thats the energy-plant, not a factory. It would becomce larger on the edges when upgraded.

It could take more work to port the units than to remade some....

And, WTH? http://warzone.berlios.de/index.php/Main_Page

We can at least steal all their textures (if the units happen to acctually be 3D that is)

SinbadEV, that sounds like an awesome idea. It would help a free XTA mod alot.

Warzone 2100 is a 3d-RTS with a fully funtional 3d-engine. The units are made from meshes and have textures. Which are ugly.

Alright I found the full download and I had a look at it.

The sound effects can be used for Spring.
Textures are in a low res pcx format.
The models are in some plain text format, but Blender can't read it.
Loads of scripts for things like the AI, briefings and single player missions.
Some binary maps.
The cursors are in some cur format F-spot did tried to read it.
The rest is C code.

The sounds are useful, but if you like to make a Warzone 2100 mod for Spring your best bet would be to start from scratch and use the original material for inspiration.

I tried the game now. Even though the game is more recent than TA, the units look much worst. Still, i was hoping that some units could be taken advantage of. Or the buildings which seemed pretty ok to me. The game also has some musics.
