Changing already Mod under GPL

Post by Pithikos »

I was wondering how you do changing a mod that is under the GPL license. I just wanted to tweak BA Chicken Defense a bit in two parts:

1. Add "starting resources" option that is not available anymore.
2. Make dodos a bit slower.

So I want to do those small changes and I know how but I don't know if I first have to contact the actual developers and in that case I am not so sure they are around anymore. If I do the changes is it ok to rename the mod to say 2.13 from 2.12?
Secondly if a mod is created how do you add it to the repository so users can download it automatically?

if the entire thing is gpl, you just be sure to preserve the license.

Have you read TheFatController's Clarification on Mutator Naming policy? If no you should.

Also, at stolen commercial content being rebranded as GPL.

gpl state's within it's self that it cannot be applied to artworks. So I presumed that the OP was talking about lua.

Are you talking about some specific software?

Anyway I pmed him as I already did what I did before reading that thread from TheFatController. Wasn't aware he is still around.

Yes, the *A models, sounds, and artwork are all stolen from the original game (Total Annihilation) and used (without Atari's permission) for *A alphabet soup in spring.

The only thing in BA that could possibly be GPL is the lua code, at which point, you need to respect that. As far as mutators and jsut ripping off BA and making your own FailA project, go right ahead. What are the BA people gonna do? Sue you for misusing their stolen content?

I thought that Cavedog had given the models and everything. Didn't know about this scandal

Didn't anyone ask for the artworks before taking them by force? The might just had given them. The Quake guys gave the whole engine pleasingly.

it isn't a scandal, just gets looked down on by many of us.
