Is there a timeline for the spring engine or any great body of easy to access history of the engine's and mod's development?

You're reading it :-)

The Forum is the most permanent record we have, other than the Dev mail list (and perhaps they have a log of all their IRC sessions, but I doubt that).

maybe if the screenshots section with the old screenshots can be found somewhere?

I saw spring first here:
http://flipcode.com/archives/05-04-2005_rt.shtml
lol i found this screenshots it by going through the image of the day archive clicking any name that looked swedish.
The first map is FloodedDesert, it was one of the three default maps with Small Divide and Mars. But what is the second map? It looks like small divide with water. Most maps had "metal fields" instead of "metal spots"

There is no engine dev mailing list since at least 3 years, do not know from before. For the engine, the most detailed history is the git repository:
http://github.com/spring/spring/commits/master

or less detailed, here:

Terrible in the sense of awesome, yes.

The forum was erased couple years ago, so history is lost.

You might want to poke around the Swedish Yankspankers site, it had the precursors to Spring: TAdemo with 3D replayer, and that bagge thing: http://www.clan-sy.com

Also look at the TAU news around the era of Spring release:
- New TA Spring Website & Videos
- TA in full 3D
- New Spring Video
- New Spring videos
- Spring 0.4b released. Community rejoice!
- A beautiful Spring day
- How MANY maps, you say?
- Spring maps double up
- More news updates
- World Domination in 3D
- Happenings around the Community
- SWTA for Spring released
- ZOMG! New Gundam Annihilation beta!
- Star Wars Spring featured in gaming magazine (and other SWS news)
etc...

Maybe I could write back an account of the early Spring days from memory, but it'd take me so long I'd never finish it.

The news forum was spared from The Big Erasure of March 2005, so yeah, check http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=2&start=80 too.

If there is interest, we could organize a historical retrospective in the wiki.

I was looking through various links on spring and i found this:

I was curious if anyone has the "oldspring" that is mentioned in the interview.

fun fact #1: after a game had ended, everything kept floating off the map in the direction it was currently going. like smoke clouds from exploded commanders and stuff would grow really big.

fun fact #2: i think the selectionkey editor has never ever changed
