Map features request

Post by AF »

We need ltos of features for map makers.

Currently if you want features on your map you need to be able to mdoel ro knwo soemone who ahs time to mdoel for you.

What we need is a precompiled set of features, ltosof them all mdoelled for us.

So for a variety fo different worlds we need

sea plants (reeds,coral etc)
rocks
treesbushes
random flora
buildings
crates/barrels etc....

OK, as I pointed out... I'm not so sure we want this.
You see, while see a second rate feature is not a good thing... seeing the same bloody feature on every map is also not a good thing.
Lets face it if you gave people a handfull of basic features the vast majority of people will use them and wont bother with creating there own. When the new maptool comes out (whatevere it is... Im sure someone *coff Buggie * will make one) it will only make teh problem worse with lots of people being able to make maps easily and jsut addding teh same old features in.

I'm all for a selection of rock, and some different trees, but can we leave buildings, creats and other map specific objects out of this? Other wise the maps will be come less and less original and we'll be flooded with the same map again and again...

Well, I understand your point aGorm but I would prefer if the selection of "default" features were pretty large. Creating a good map is after all completly different from making features and somehow I doubt that even anything close to all mapmakers would be able to find and/or convince anyone to make features for him so it would simply mean the map would lack features.

After all, players will also obviously choose the maps they like too (which are most likely rather well made in that case) so I'm not so worried about a flood of badly made maps. Especially as just making the texture/heightmap is a bit of work.
Still, with that said and although I don't agree with aGorm I do agree that trees/plants and rocks are the most important features. A good variation of vegetation and rocks would go a far way to enable the creation of maps with a bit of athmosphere. You can do quite a bit with some nifty texture maps (faking light sources for example) and the .smd, but a good variety of vegetation and rocks gives you quite a few more options. Buildings and other features are more insignificant in comparision in my opinion.

rocks (lunar, martian, terran), trees (Coniferous, Alpine, Deciduous, TROPICAL make some swamp trees, mofos!), multiple geovents would all be greatly appreciated as a starter pack for all map makers to toy with.

Point taken... but part of the greatness of TAS mapping is that you DON'T have to be an expert modeler to have a shot at producing a great map. I prefer well done and overused features to poorly done features that I only have to look at every once in a while.

Unique objects that relate only to a specific map wouldnt be the sort of thgin i was thinking off. I was thinking of a wide wide variety of basic features. Mainyl a large variety of plant/sea stuff and assorted rocks and other thgisn foudn on most worlds. Sort of like trees that'd fit in any map.

I'm not sure Buggie will do anything... He seems to look at Spring as dead with the mere sight of SupCom one year away!

In the last few weeks IMHO... I think my maps have be getting
better. ... That's my opinion ....

Now I'm putting alot of time in on learning how to model and
stuff like that .... ( it adds a extra week or two per map)

If their was more custom trees, rocks and other stuff floating
around. The people making maps could spend more time on
other stuff to improve there maps.

   So, if some has some free time I need
some to make 5 custom rocks small to medium, 3 larger like
boulders and some trees that look burnt or 3 more custom
trees ...   If some has time ....

OK, some peopel have slightly misinturpted my post.

I want more tree's! And rocks! That sort of thing is fine!

However, if someone moddels say... and abandoned aline space craft, I dont want to suddenly see this same old spaceship croping up on every new map "cause it looks just so cool" because that would sux. Its not like were gonna end up with someone moddeling 100 or so of everything, so if its taken to those sorts of moddels we'll just be flooded out with them.
Or some people could take some time to learn how to make there own features for there maps, or get a friend to.

Is that more clearer??
