Modelling Tools for Spring
Well, at this point, the spring specific s3o editor UpSpring is shaping up good.
But this tool is not a "modeller" tool, but instead has the most basic functionality to put together units models, and its corresponding textures or UV map.
Here is a small walktrough on this process using blender, wings, and upspring.
That said, the objective of this thread is gather user feedback on the spectrum of the tools available to use for unit design.
That is, for modelling, UV mapping, exporting, etc.
let teh modeller reviews beguin1!!1!
try to provide the media, that is, the unit concept, the model files, uvmaps.. some screeshots.. we appreciate your collaboration! :)
(as i would like to learn too!)

You might regret saying that.
Anyways i'm never touching Blender again. The importer/exporter commands don't work unless you have Python installed, but I could never get Blender to find it, I'm never using it again. Plus its way to combersome and non user friendly.
If only I had a more decient computer for running 3DS MAX on.

Well, Blender isn't the editor for me to. I'm getting nowere with it.
I'll stick with bloated 3ds max for a while.
However, I never was able to get an unit textured in spring.
There are now more people who succed in texturing, so I'll find new and better ways.
but there is nothing wrong with black units... I mean I like black.

Just playing around with Unicode.. I will stop being l33t now.
You need FireFox (under Linux) to display it right.
Internet Explorer won't display them all.
On topic,
I never made a unit for TA but I can model in both 3D Studio Max and Blender.
Both applications have a different tool set.
Some things in can easyly be done in Blender other things in 3DsMax.
I'm in the impression Blender is better for organic (round) stuff.
3DsMax is more exact in my perception.
With both applications you can make about anything you like.
I'm not aware of all the functions of both applications, so I might use 3DsMax for something that actualy is easy with some Blender function I'm not familiar with.
Blenders GUI is good in the sense that it uses the screen real estate far better.
3DsMax GUI is more strait forward.
The fact that I use Linux as my main platform makes any Windows application hard to use. (I also have a WinXP laptop)
Blender is the best multi-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris) 3D application.
That makes it my tool of preference.
Other advantages are that it's free and open source.
3DsMax costs a lot of money if you can't get if via some school discount.
And I generally don't pirate my software.
But... If your new to 3D modelling.
Wings3D looks very simple and could actualy be the best tool for making Spring models.
You don't need all the advanced material and light effects or a hair simulation systems when your modelling a Spring unit.
It's multi platform (Windows, Mac and Linux), free and open source.
But I never used any of the 3 app's to make a unit so there might be a problem with exporting or things like that.

I know that models exported in Wings work correctly in Upspring, but the UV map was a bit dodgy. But this was quite a few versions ago, and I havnt tried again since. But Wings is pretty easy to use just lacking in some of the more advanced features. But you can work around them if you persavere long enough. It is a step down from Maya, which is what I usually use, but it works fine for moddeling Spring units once you get the hang of it.
The intrude feature of wings absolutely rules everything, though I haven't found a use for it yet
EDIT: Ok badly phrased...

A cylinder to a tube in 2 clicks, no use?Zaphod wrote:The intrude feature of wings absolutely rules everything, though I haven't found a use for it yet
Create cylinder, select end faces, inset, intrude = tube.

I will give that one a try, the online manual is very helpful.Michilus_nimbus wrote:Anim8or rules
