I'm with bob on that thing. The minute the center of mass started tipping forward, the whole arrangement would become absurd. It'd fall over faster than you can say, "Pisa".

Its because you force yourself into thinking a tripod has to move like a four legged animal, but imagine it moving sideways, rotating its torso in the moving process, and the three legs get pretty speedy.

The rest of it is a pretty nice mech, I just dislike strongly the trileg config.

Its a balanced setup, but I can't imagine that mech moving faster than a slow crawl with 3 legs.
The only believable trileg mech I've seen is the Half-Life 2 Hunter

Well, let's start with the obvious question- how's it going to generate that rotational torque in the first place? Moving in a spiral pattern like that, even assuming that you could deal with that problem, would cause other very serious problems.

For example: just imagine, for a moment, what will happen to the center of mass when you've managed to lift two legs off the ground.

for three legged... how about two "normal" legs at the front doing a walk animation, then a third "leg" at the back that is in constant contact with the ground and moves like an inchworm

Well the three legs in the ares are all the same, since the body sits in the center. That doesn't sound unbelievable although.

Movement video(although yes, people could call it fluff and shortcutted): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipiwSVv42Wk

Lol...before someone says "DO IT YOURSELF!"

1.I think someone tried and failed
2.Even if someone did, I doubt they would have the Ares. It is only part of the Defunct Mech Warrior: Age of Destruction Canon, which some of the Battletech Mechwarrior fans scorn, and really even among the MW:AoD guys it was less of a sight than say a Mad Cat or an Atlas.

There is a open source Mech Warrior game out there, although its not RTS.

Ignoring silliness.

I'm not sold on the three-legged idea. Sure it can work, but my mind is going to the world of recreation vehicles. Four-wheelers: not that stable. Three-wheelers: illegal last I heard, very unstable and dangerous. Motorcycles: Most stable and safe. Way to go 8)

I think the only place I would feel a three-legged mech is appropriate is for a very large, slow, ominous machine of war. Tripods anyone?

Nobody is saying that 3 leged machines can't move.

We're saying that its not practical, and also that its quite obvious that no matter how you do it, a fixed joint tripod is slow as shit compared to bipedal or quadripedal movement.

The only sensible tripod is the Halflife hunter, or the War of the Worlds tripod, each of which has fluid and complicated leg motion.

And several joints.

They did a pretty good job with striders though, and they had a 2 joint leg with a simple animation.

I had planned a tripedal design for a unit once too but ended up with it being a crappy design. Some references if anyone is interested though:

Animals with one front leg:
3 legged Leopard
3 legged dog
another 3 legged dog

Animals with one back leg:
a cat
another cat

Reasonable tripod walk cycle just lacking some gravity influence (without "rope like" War of the Worlds design):
