Hi Sean, where to get the tools ??Sean Mirrsen wrote:I have finally found an acceptable UV mapper/unwrapper. At least one I can map with. UVEdit Pro for Lightwave. Lightwave can export UVmapped 3ds'es, and UVEdit is the most handy mapping tool I could come across. In spite of this, and the very handy layered LWO model format, could we maybe get LWO model support
I got no luck with LW + Upspring....
we must bug more on Zaphod to deliver lwo (or even lwo only

but before that... where to d/l uv edit pro for LW ?

Blender 3D viewing controls are a bit like lightwave I think and the 2D views work very well too. It has proper menus not like the old versions, and i t also has a huge number of features. This is an editor that can do almost anything the expensive commercial ones can, and sometimes even more. I just can't see why anyone wouldn't like blenderBlender has the most moronic control system ever.

About the UV mapping, it's getting a lot better in upspring 1.0... I've added a way to map all the objects at once, and I have already used it succesfully to map the arm commander in Wings3D and put it back on the objects.
I'm still messing with lightwave, I'm unable to import/export anything so far... :S

similar to blender ??
I dont think so

Blender has the fucking worst 3D interface for any 3D program ever conceived, and anyone who uses it must be very well used to having aneurysms on a rgular basis, i mean it looks like an elephant swalled a bunch of random boxes and shat them all out over a computre monitor and the makers of Blender decided that they should model na interface after that and once they also peed on it and decided to bash themswelves over the head a few tims and drink a few too many shots of vodka, goddamn retarded GUI makes everything else (even Linux) more desirable in terms of anytihng it makes me explode as to how fucking stupid that inetreface is and argh just tihnking about it makes me want to shoot myself.

its not a 3d interface, just a plan 2d gui

try looking at this user interface tutorial
.
Or take a look on the web tutorials page.
personally, even when its .. scarse in further explanations at times, this noob to pro wikibook seems to help a lot.
dont know the program yet, but the fact almost every function has its shortcut key, and that some shortcuts "remap" in different modes, seems to be incredible well tougth.
Also like the absence of so many buttons at one time.
yours post looks like a random anti-blender flame to me, nothing someone that has tried it could tell.

I didn't see Blender, but Lightwave has an interface that is easy to work with, easy to customize, and at the same time, very compact. Plus you can map your own shortkeys to anything you need, not to mention write your own plugins in C and LWScript. I have seen Max, and tried to work with it, and really, even Photoshop in all its function-hiding glory (I searched for the spacing slider for half an hour in the new CS2), fades in comparison, although they're really quite similar in abilities.
Well, a word for him.Zaphod wrote:I guess you're just too stupid to use it then....
(No offense intended to people with a normal properly phrased opinion who just prefer another editor)
Have you tried it out recently?
The only people who find renders gui good are programmers that have become to brain damaged to actually understand actual usability while jacking off for years thinking of flowcharts....
In german, there is a nice word for it: "Betriebsblindheit". People can use the gui because they have been using it for years (hell, you can even use a spaceshuttle if you did it for years but that doesnt mean its easy) and now just put their hands on their ears and shout "i dont hear you" whenever changes are suggested because it would break the greater cause of things that are just because.
Look at this:

Ok it looks complicated, but so do all the other 3D editors. When it comes to usability, the switch between edit mode and object mode is a bit like 3Ds max. In edit mode they even have the axis arrows. Works very intuitively.
Movement can be confusing to a beginner because of the mouse gestures, but I don't think you can see that as "sticking to past" behavior, it's simply a fast way to select translate/rotate/scale that actual users will like.
More complex things can be done through the menu and that's about all a beginner has to learn.
I haven't used it for very long, I admit it took some practice but so does 3dsmax (even more actually).
The only thing I don't like it how modifying the interface works, but once you've set it up the way you want that's no longer a problem.
I have the feeling just about everyone is basing their opinion on what everyone else says or a very old version...

i suggest a sepparate thread for any jerk to thrown pre-made flames about blender or other free tool for that purpouse.
lets stick this one to the new unit format.

*Sigh*
I've been modelling for the past five years or so, and i am proficient with Rhino, Maya, and Lightwave. I can sorta-use 3DSMax. I cannot stand Blender.
Sorry if I I sounded pissy, what that was was several years worth of anti-Blender sentiment unelased, more or less
The thing that always bothered me about Blender is that it so incredibly powerful (amazing stuff has been amde with it, I know it has lots of great features), but it is too goddamn hard to even learn your way around. It's horribly unintuitive.
Although, Zaphod, based on your post's screenie, it seems Blender has cleaned up its interface in the past year, which is about when I had the last good version.
So meh. I might as well give it a shot and see if its any better :)
