I think spring should host their own ideatorrent page. just like ubuntu... to my experience it works great!
perhaps you could split it up between mods also.

Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
what are the pros over the forum?
Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
fewer idiots register to a new site maybe?
Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
I think that the main pro is that it is more accessible. in a forum thread you have to make a post to show what you think/vote, it's more anonymous in that sense and also much more effective. imo it's more accessible also because it is more structured. the biggest 'rationales' get better attention, easier spotting the best 'solutions', by clustering both of them you also have a decrease in re-requests. It also has different categories which minimizes questions/concerns about what is being worked on, what has been done, won't be done.hoijui wrote:what are the pros over the forum?
The more soft pros are that I think it spurs creativity. This is also because of the accessability. because it is more effective in presenting different solutions to problems readers can much more quickly follow a train of thought or see the faults in it, get inspiration. I believe that's why ideatorrent is so good in graphic and other more abstract discussions and presentations.
I actually can't come up with any big cons. I know certain decisions require expertise and then public voting might not be best, but I hope most of these situations can be solved through discussion, and information and understanding could be a big asset.

Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
For the most part only technical people use ubuntu. There are surely regular home users too but - the people at least know how not to do stupid things.
Not the case with Spring. Spring runs on any OS that matters, it's free, and it doesn't even require the user to make an install CD or other similar barrier to dumb. Something like this will just have the same problems the forum does - stupid solutions get lots of support from stupids, the rare good solutions only get rare support. The devs are smart enough to pick good solutions when they see them, if not to make their own good solutions. This system would only be superfluous.
One benefit the forum has is that you can attach your name to an idea. If Argh, Smoth, Zwzg...whatever he is, TFC, me, and other individuals* who have some degree of experience support an idea, it means the idea will be widely used to great effect. If none of us support an idea, the developers might realize it's not something that's of immediate importance.
There are tons of examples where this name recognition has moved the engine forward, and exponentially more examples where this informal system has kept retarded ideas in obscurity. It's not ideal, but it's working.
*sorry for not including developers of other mods/games, I am just not familiar with everyone.

Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
it seems not to have really hard pros or cons to me, and even doh we can argue further, we would only see if it is worthwhile when testing it for some time.
i can think of pros and cons like:
+ less stupid users in the forum, as they are there
- more "maintenence work" for devs, as they have to look in two places
+ an additional layer till it gets to devs: most users write there, and if there is interesting stuff, someoen will link it in a post in the forum -> less "maintenence work" for devs
...
and please dont tell me how likely/unlikely each one of these points is
it would need someone to host it, and then testing, and if it is total fail, kiling it.
if nobody wants t host it, that would speak for itsself, i guess :D

Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
People would still make forum posts even if we set this up.
Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
sourceforge.net nowadays happily takes care of both hosting and testing. :>hoijui wrote:it would need someone to host it, and then testing, and if it is total fail, kiling it.

can be added by project admins via https://sourceforge.net/account/hosted-apps
edit: oh not sure about link

Re: spring ideatorrent hosting
If it were to be implemented, sourceforge page would probably be the best place, but springinfo could easily host this if need be. However, whoever owns springrts.com should make a sub and point it to wherever this thing is hosted (ideas.springrts.com?).
I can see how it would be neat, and honestly I'd be happy to go ahead and set one up on springinfo and see if it gets any real use. Might be a good thing, might be total fail, I guess we wouldn't really know until we gave it a shot.

Since everyone totally failed to make any mention at all about it: https://sourceforge.net/apps/ideatorrent/springrts/
