[linux] Emulation

Post by tsunetomo »

(I don't know if this is the right place to post this.)

First of all,
Hi all and thanks for your hard work.
TADemo recorder as well as TASpring are awesome projects.

I'm a proud user of GNU\Linux.
So far I've successfully managed to run Total Annihilation under TransGaming/wine emulation layer.

I was wondering if it is possible to do the same with TADemo.
I tried to emulate the installation, successfully, i think.

But when I start TA, enter, say, skirmish and hit CTRL-F2 to set the options
no window pops up.

Is there some kind moose who has info/ideas/suggestions for such a case?

Thanks in advance

I'd like to show you something.

If you look at the top title you'll see somethign wodnerous. No doubt you've seen ti and thought ti was a render, but there is a definate reason this site is called TASpring.clan-sy.com.

While you where getting Total annihilation tow rok udner Wine, people here where happily working away at destroying other untis in a full 3d environment, under the spring engine.

There's a linux port of spring. And spring runs under wine with no sound.

Are you asking about the TADemo recorder for the old TA? If so, i can't really help you. Wine is a little like windows, it either works or it doesn't and there is little you can do about it.

If you're talking about demo recording in TA Spring, Spring already records all game by default and you can use it to play back recordings. You can even play a recording to other players while connected to the battleroom lobby.

And by the way, the Linux port is very close, it seems. It is already beeing tested and stuff. Maybe you can help testing it out.

Once upon a time, there was a forum

Some day I'll fix this forum perhaps.. In the meantime, I would suggest you use the TA Spring forums instead if you want to reach us..

I haven't sighted an SY on the TAS forums in 2 months... This project isn't even led by an SY any more.

They are still around, but this defineatly isn't the best place to reach them.

Mr Fnordia posted in the news a couple of days back, and I think technically Mr Zaphod is now an SY.

On my computer, TA works under cedega (even with TCP/IP networking with a hack). The demo recorder also works, but if I play at anything other than 640x480, it stops getting input (ie. Ctrl-F2 stops working). This makes it useless for multiplayer games :/

You have to be Swedish to be a Swedish Yankspanker, my friend. Zaphod is not Swedish :P

More like... Nationaltechnicality's. Or something.

But i heard that TA: Spring workes on Linnux machines, or was that just a crazy rumour.

It's more of a general discussion than a feature request I think.
MTR involves only requests so far ;)

aha.. true all topics listed at MTR are feature requests, but it doesn't state they must be.

i suppose that part is missing then.

MTRs are all features requests so far, but it can be anything that comes up every month or so. This counts I think.

Same here.
I can use the replayer @ 800x600, though.

I wonder if the ctrl-f2 issue has something to do with this:

From tademo's documentation
Why the interface upgrade requires a TOTALA.EXE patch under Win 9x/ME
Under Win9x, DirectX installs a program called ddhelp.exe residently in memory as soon as it is used by any program. ddhelp.exe does not seem to
affect or even be at all necessary to DirectX' operation; maybe it accelerates the subsequent loading of DirectX components by a few microseconds.
Its only noticeable effect is that it disables the standard Windows DLL search/loading sequence for most DirectX DLLs (Microsoft being Microsoft
don't need to follow any standards, you know) including ddraw.dll. In order to avoid the custom TA Demo ddraw.dll being ignored, it is necessary to
call it differently, and patch TOTALA.EXE so that it will load it instead of ddraw.dll.
I'm going to do some experiments. I'll keep you informed.

Have you guys tried it with Wine (even though cedega is suposedly better especially at games)? I use it with Wine and runs fine, although with a few annoyences (no sound and fonts sometimes put some letters on top of others).

Scrool down to section "Running Spring via wine".
