For over population, logan's run comes into mind.

Re: Energy conservation hysteria
Iirc keeping a large dog as a pet is almost twice as bad for environment as an SUV with 10k kilometers per year. Just imagine how bad it is to have a dozen children running about every shack in India and China.
Re: Energy conservation hysteria
Chinese have been limited to 1 children per woman since 1979.Teutooni wrote:Just imagine how bad it is to have a dozen children running about every shack in India and China.
Re: Energy conservation hysteria
Kinda depends what you feed to that dog. Its not absolutely necessary to feed them with highquality meat packaged in tiny aluminum cans. Yeah theres still some strain always, but needn't be that big...Teutooni wrote:Iirc keeping a large dog as a pet is almost twice as bad for environment as an SUV with 10k kilometers per year. Yeah that works super well:zwzsg wrote:Chinese have been limited to 1 children per woman since 1979.Teutooni wrote:Just imagine how bad it is to have a dozen children running about every shack in India and China.

Re: Energy conservation hysteria
You sound ironic. True, that sort of stuff would never work in our weak individualistic democracies, but Chinese regime is strong enough to make it effective.

no doubt, no doubt. For over population, logan's run comes into mind.
re: the picture of the coal miners...
i wish i still had it now, but we had some environmental group in canada distributing this flier about "oh, nuclear power is dangerous, lets make windmills instead." i have a good friend, an electrical engineer who writes firmware for the machinery that regulates / distributes power from nuclear stations (im sure i dont have that exactly right; but its his area of expertise in either case)
we have this thing the "CNE" downtown which is a sort of glorified fairground, and in this fairground is a windmill. a massive one. everyone is super proud of it, "oh look how good this is for the environment" but in reality, according to my friend, it has negative efficiency... in order to process the power generated by the windmill, you have to convert voltages and amps or whatever those little bastards are called, and you end up spending more electricity to get the windmill to work than it actually generates.
and here we are, based on a misconception about a windmill, bashing nuclear power and distributing millions of fliers around my city (printed of course on non-recycled paper)
its the same as that "carbon tax"... just a joke to make people feel better about themselves... if you have a big truck, pay extra tax, and that tax will go towards saving the environment
and of course, theres NO way that those miners could work in a nuclear plant...

Re: Energy conservation hysteria
I seriously doubt the 1 child policy would work over here at all. There are a lot of women who start to get really depressed if they can't have kids and there are men who would refuse to stay with a woman (regardless of whether or not he has a good relationship he has with her) if she can't have kids.

Re: Energy conservation hysteria
Well things aren't that strict anymore in China anyway. There at least are some regions where this one child only law got extended...
This got fixed with the 5000 series which has a like 40 watts lower consumption providing very good consumption rates while idling...
Nope - not really. The HD4890 had some tiny detail improvements but they didn't make any significant difference and so it was like 1-2 watts below a HD4870 which simply doesn't make things better. The 4000 series just lacked the ability to either disable parts or clock down and run at lower voltages. You could do something about the clocks by putting them down to 200/200 by yourself saving you something around 10-15 watts afaik which still doesn't change anything on them pretty much being the cards with the highest idle consumption around...Caydr wrote:4890 was a unique case IIRC since it was actually based on an improved architecture rather than just being a higher-clocked 4870. As such it did actually have reasonably good idle power usage if I remember right.

Re: Energy conservation hysteria
Adding nuclear power has worked pretty shittily so far... And theres much more resources been used into that tech than into making adv solars or whatever but still its full of failing. At what point should we just give up on it and try something else?

Someone should develop drugs to ameliorate the biological clock induced "I want a baby" depression... and put it in the drinking water like fluoride.Panda wrote:I seriously doubt the 1 child policy would work over here at all. Though the second thing you said doesn't apply because it's one child per woman... so the man would have known in advance that the woman either did or did not have a child prior to forming said relationship.
(edit: I've reread this a couple times and I'm pretty sure it could be taken as offensive... if you are offended please assume that I didn't mean what you think I meant and move on... also please don't take this message as a suggestion that you should look for a way to have been offended)

Too much alcohol is bad for you. Vomit has an acrid smell. Still missing what I was saying? Then miss because there's no point in talking to you right now. Not even coffee would help at that point. Laterz. Be sure to get a designated driver if you plan to go anywhere.SinbadEV wrote:Someone should develop drugs to ameliorate the biological clock induced "I want a baby" depression... and put it in the drinking water like fluoride.Panda wrote:I seriously doubt the 1 child policy would work over here at all. I ride the bus and I don't drink alcohol, there is no excuse for my behavior... I don't really think I need one, but I figured I'd mention it... perhaps you are misunderstanding me.Panda wrote:Too much alcohol is bad for you. Vomit has an acrid smell. Number 1: Overpopulation problems (where they exist) are caused by people having children... removing the physiological desire to fill the void in ones meaningless life by creating a being who is utterly dependent on you would solve this problem.
Number 2: You indicated that a man would leave a woman who was incapable of having children... I was pointing out that the woman is not incapable of having children... she can have exactly 1... there is no situation I can perceive where the type of man who would leave a woman because she was not going to make a child with him would form a relationship with a woman when it was readily apparent she already had a child and legally could not make another one with him.
Number 3: I have been speaking semantically and I really think the entire "illegal to have more then one child" law is inhuman... your not going to agree with my reasoning in this so I won't bother stating it. I just wanted to point out solutions to the two particular examples of problems you mentioned with the 1 per woman law... not support the idea in any way.
Number 4: I have a wife and two children and have personally experience the depression a woman feels when she finds that "void in her life that only a child can fill"... twice... the second time it was a "void in her life that only a baby can fill"... I fear my son's first birthday.

A lot of gay men and women manage fine with their inability to mutually concieve

I don't think that people should mess with their physiology that much. Doing so would probably cause more problems than solve them.SinbadEV wrote:Number 1: Overpopulation problems (where they exist) are caused by people having children... removing the physiological desire to fill the void in ones meaningless life by creating a being who is utterly dependent on you would solve this problem.
I was referring to a situation where a man would leave a woman who he was already with because he found out that he could not make a kid with her in order to make a general point that people do all kinds of strange things with relationships when the question of having kids is involved. Having a 1 child only law would really mess things up for a lot of people who were all about family lineage and passing on their genes to the next generation tradition. Plus, I don't think that it would happen often, but I'm sure that there could be situations out there where a man would form a relationship with a woman when it was apparent that she could not have another kid and then, later on, leave her because she couldn't have kids.SinbadEV wrote:Number 2: You indicated that a man would leave a woman who was incapable of having children... Seriously? You've become depressed because your kids are getting older? Yikes.SinbadEV wrote:Number 4: I have a wife and two children and have personally experience the depression a woman feels when she finds that "void in her life that only a child can fill"... twice... the second time it was a "void in her life that only a baby can fill"... AF has a good point. Much can be learned from gay people.AF wrote:A lot of gay men and women manage fine with their inability to mutually concieve

@Panda: Thanks for addressing my concerns in such a clear manner, I am convinced that you misinterpreted my original post's intent and am gld you now understand.
No... again, communication is so difficult sometimes... my WIFE became depressed when my fist child approached her first birthday... at which point she started whining and pestering and eventually managed to convince me that we needed to have another child... hence my fear of my second child reaching that same milestone triggering a similar reaction in my wife for a third child... I have a boy and a girl... I'm done.Panda wrote:Seriously? You've become depressed because your kids are getting older? Ah, I see. I don't really get that kind of thing, but I have been accused of being selfish before by other women because of that. I hope your wife can find some way to relax when it comes to that.SinbadEV wrote:@Panda: Thanks for addressing my concerns in such a clear manner, I am convinced that you misinterpreted my original post's intent and am gld you now understand.

I'm beginning to understand why SinbadEV spends so much time on the Spring forum.
