Google Electricty
Google has been granted the right to buy and sell electricity like a utility does. Google says it wants to use this to better control where their electricity comes from and become closer to their goal of becoming carbon neutral. However, they also hint that they want to also actually go into the business of energy.
Re: Google Electricty
Why do they want to do that, go into the business of energy?
Re: Google Electricty
because they are a huge company and electricity is something relevant to their interests. ADDITIONALLY its an inelastic good, so basically they are investing billions into making trillions.
Re: Google Electricty
It is possible to transmit data through the power stream if I remember correctly... Perhaps a new way to connect to the internet?

Re: Google Electricty
It won't be long before google owns a bit of everything, and becomes evil.
Re: Google Electricty
It is not only possible, it's been demonstrated. It'd be reeeeal interesting to know who currently has those patent rights. It is possible to transmit data through the power stream if I remember correctly... Perhaps a new way to connect to the internet?

Re: Google Electricty
Today the power and tomorrow the water company. Then they will buy all the railroads and transmit internet through those too. Then they'll snatch up Park Place and Boardwalk and we'll all be paying rent to Google.
Re: Google Electricty
Actual google already has some powerplants, and i guess the right to buy/sell electricity is just a little addon for selling surplus power when they take down one of theire serverfarms near one of there reservoirdams.

GO TO JAIL. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT 200 RAMS.
Re: Google Electricty
Google has bloom boxes!!
Do you not know about those network plugs that transmit data over the power cables running through your house? They're like power socket adaptors, only instead of foreign sockets, they have ethernet sockets and data throughput leds

thats cool too.
Re: Google Electricty
Bloom boxes are a shitty type of fuel cell. Less efficient and 10x more expensive.
Re: Google Electricty
no idea what a bloom box is but the comparision is useless.
the sizes of these things they compare is totally different.
100 kWe vs 570 MWe
Of course the bigger installation is more efficient. But not everywhere you need such a large plant.
The small thing is probally meant for more decentralized use so its totally different. Maybe works with lower quality ressources too etc.
Also turbine technology is fairly optimized already while this seems something new.

New York City streets in 1890. Besides telegraph lines, multiple electric lines were required for each class of device requiring different voltages.[/i]
lol.
or what should we look at?
