Wow, faster intertubes, this means moar porn, moar games, moar movies than one mind can handle anyways.

Srsly, what the Intertubes needs is less flashy media and moar quality. You can have all the gasoline in the world, but as long as there is no good car, no good road, no good music and especially no place in the world worth to visit, a fat load of good it will do ya.

Re: Google ISP
I can tell you honestly that I wouldn't choose to work at Google in most capacities. The jobs range from brutal to completely superfluous, and the profits have begun to sour the company. They're already in the SGI buildings, I don't need to predict some of the bad turns which will follow.

Re: Google ISP
How has the company soured? It's the #1 Search and Free email provider on the planet. They create new and innovative shit all the time which they turn around and give away for free. As this thread is about giving 1gbps service to people at affordable prices. I don't think you've sat down and thought this through.
1gbps is 1000mbps. 8 bits = 1 byte. That means that transfer rate is
(1 gigabit =) 128 megabytes. One Hundred and twenty eight fucking megabytes of transfer speed!!! That just so happens to be 128 excellent reasons to drop your pants and jock of until you bleed. PER SECOND!
Neddie I know you are anti-capitalist (which is just silly if oyu think it though, but we can save that for another political rant thread), but I don't get why when a company does well for all the right reasons and becomes large, all of a sudden they are evil because they're big. That little theory doesn't hold much water when you put google on the line.
Think about it, without google, where would the internet and technology be if google were never invented? I shudder to think.
If google will for the rest of my life continue to stroke my cock for me and give me free shit at the same time, you bet your ass I'd be happy to sell them my soul and my future ex-wife. If they want to give me a job and pay me disgusting amounts of money while shoving me into the best benefits package I have ever seen, you bet your ass I'll be the first on on my knees in the bosses office (not literally you sickos! ;p ) (inb4picsoritdidn'thappen).
Long story short, I am very thankful for what has freely been given to the world, and they have my full support as long as they continue to do the same.
Edit: Also, rule 34 on the google logo.
Edit2: I believe that 1gbps transfer speed could cure erectile dysfunction.

Re: Google ISP
Where did you ever get the impression that I'm anti-capitalist? I don't consider them evil, either. All I said was, I would not choose to work there in most capacities.
Not all the jobs are of the sort that you describe. Seven or eight in each ten people I know who work there do not enjoy it or do not do anything which can be enjoyed in the long term (Data Entry). It is clear from here that they're making some good business decisions but an increasing number of poor ones. People not in the valley, not in proximity to what Google actually does do not seem to get it - they are not as great a place to work as the rest of the world believes.

Re: Google ISP
Seven to Eight over ten sounds like a pretty good ratio considering that it seems like 99/100 jobs in the US alone are pretty much crap(That is strictly my opinion though. From what I heard, some people actually enjoy flipping burgers at McDonalds).

Regarding the rest. OMG, I have to work in an office building, dman, my job is shit work. Seriously, who gives a shit? You're making ridiculous amounts of money doing shitwork with a massive benefits package. Boo-frickidy-hoo.
Re: Google ISP
A few of the posts above this one were enough to convince me that reading the thread thus far was needless, so I'll just comment on what I know:
They're only considering offering the product to a small number of people, like half a million or something. With any luck this is a pilot program. Hopefully they will learn how to either A) do "customer support" or else B) offer the service only to people who know things as basic as "reboot your shitty $20 router, problem solved 90% of the time". This is to avoid rapid bankruptcy, since to my knowledge Google hasn't got a record for outsourcing jobs very much.
Speaking of their support department, they need to hire one. Lots of awful stories about finger-pointing between HTC and Google on the Nexus One without anyone actually getting the tech support they need. Oddly enough, it seems much of the time "hit the reset button" really truly does solve the problem. Maybe there's a router built in?
Regarding Google and its morality or lack thereof, as well as their increasingly frightening amount of power and knowledge of our daily lives... my attitude is, until they screw up a few times, leave them be. Obviously they're doing SOMETHING right. People who demand privacy but simultaneously have no idea how to do things like click the "private" button have no place complaining about potential abuses of privacy. In other words, people must learn to exercise caution in the virtual world just as much as in the real world and not assume that big brother is there to keep them safe. And then, of course, complaining about big brother being there at all.
Example, Google's CEO Eric Schmidt (sp?) recently got lambasted about his comments in an interview about online privacy. He said something very similar to, "If you're doing something online you don't want other people to know about, maybe you shouldn't be doing it at all." To me, this seems like a very, very reasonable statement. Just because you're doing something online does not magically grant you a shield of +100 chameleon. An example I used in a discussion on the subject went something like, "If you like to bathe in cow's blood, you should probably at the very least be sure that the windows are closed so people won't see you do it."
Online anonymity without going to a little bit of trouble (proxy, vpn, tor, etc) is not and never was a reality, so taking it for granted was and always will be a stupid thing to do, which stupid people will continue to do, and then have their stupid faces posted on Digg when their boss finds their Facebook account where they talk about stealing supplies.
The reason people are happy to see Google doing more things is that generally they do them well and don't call it quits if something is half-assed. If something's beta quality, it's labeled as such. They might release a "Windows Me" but within a couple years it'll be a "Windows XP" and progress will continue from there. So far they haven't done anything that makes me want to be suspicious of them. They're a corporation that serves their own interest, naturally, but they have yet to stick their logo on an inferior product, call it revolutionary, and then charge a $800 tax for the privilege. Or release Windows Me.

I've never, ever said that. I've never publicly advocated another system, either.Forboding Angel wrote:Because you've told me as much, more than once.neddiedrow wrote:Where did you ever get the impression that I'm anti-capitalist? As to your response, once again, people don't seem to get it. Additionally, like all companies with a taste of success, this one seems to be increasingly seeking the rainbow path to Valhalla. The value of employment at Google when seeking employment elsewhere has begun to wane as well.
