Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
its fine if SL downloading isnt slow although a few people i know had problems with it
SD just isnt slow either
and it has additional methods of keeping up with mod packages
(i think thats what rapid was for)

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
What? I never said SL was slow or I never "dumped" on SL, in fact I helped with SL downloader (server) and said its should work as fine as SD for torrent things.Forboding Angel wrote:But please stop using every excuse as a thinly veiled attempt to dump on SL.
You are the only one with such behavior here, you take any opportunity to attack SD (for no reason since you obviously have no idea what it does). Such stance is clearly foolish.
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
It used to be SpringLobby the alternative, and TASClient the default, and now TASClient is called alternative? How confusing!
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
It seems this is how Satirik wants it.
I will probably switch completely to SL at some point if Satirik keeps going in this direction(not judging,if thats how you want it im fine with it and thx for devving tasclient for so long).
ATM I am still waiting for the more daring to test SL and it's devs to fix it and make it even more bug free/optimize UI before I fully convert.

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
Doesn't seem to be much mention of QTLobby, I've found it to be quite good.
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
I have always used SL, but I did not know the download was fixed!
I right click a game, select DL mod/map and VROOOM here is comes as fast as my connection can handle, this is pretty sweet. Thanks, BD and koshi! (and everyone else who helped)
I also prefer SL's customizable UI to tasclient, and it seems to be very stable.

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
Tasclient is a good bit more customizable, it's just a pain to do so.
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
While I, personally, couldn't care less if TASC was axed from the installer, SpringDownloader has some features that are unique and vital. It has an auto-updater that shares content between games (this is the rather-confusingly-named Rapid. ), the widget DB, and a CA changelog viewer, all of which I use, at least, on a weekly basis.
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
It also has backup copy spam!

No, but seriously, SD should be in the installer, and I don't think anybody would contest that.
EDIT: Appears to be downloading when it is closed...
EDIT 2: Appears not to close when closed...

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
made a mantis feature request this morning (for adding SD):
http://springrts.com/mantis/view.php?id=1824
so far, it looks to me like there is pretty nobody that does not want SD in the installer.
Licho, which URL should we use to fetch latest SD?
should SD be included in the installer or be downloaded during install?
should it be installed by default?
should it be under the Lobbies subsection, or have its own?

Same as before: http://files.caspring.org/caupdater/Spr ... loader.exe
- should SD be included in the installer or be downloaded during install?
Better to download it from url so its always latest - as before.
- should it be installed by default?
Since all items in installer are checked by default, I think it could be checked too.
- should it be under the Lobbies subsection, or have its own?
Probably better to have its own, like easy content installer, since its not directly lobby related.

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
Auswaschbar mentioned to me in chat:
the installer should not rely on an internet connection by default. that would mean, either SD is included in the installer, or unticked by default.
So far, it was part of TASClient, which was unticked by default, so i guess this would be the more obvious choice then: unticket by default & download during install

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
Fuck no. Apparently I've been talking to myself. Only include it if it is integrated into one or both of the lobbies. The last thing spring needs is yet another 3rd party program in the mix making us all look like a bunch of rank freaking amateurs.hoijui wrote:made a mantis feature request this morning (for adding SD):

The obvious choice is integration with TASClient.
We already have springsettings which should be integrated into both lobbies. SD has a lot of capabilities that we can't use (no thanks to licho). Once again, I am violently opposed to SD being included in the installer. If tasclient wants to install it as a dependency, then fine, that works, but definitely NOT in the spring installer.
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
SpringSettings is integrated into SpringLobby already. I only provide an external build for the benefit of Tasclient users.

Couple posts got wiped... posting my relevant response...
@koshi, my apologies, I haven't been keeping up with the SL changelog lately.

Wth are you talking about again?Forboding Angel wrote:SD has a lot of capabilities that we can't use (no thanks to licho). Once again, I am violently opposed to SD being included in the installer.
And is your idea of "professional" your "module updater" - aka .bat scripts by which you replaced default spring installer once?
Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?

Re: Why was tasclient/springdownloader removed from installer?
Where's the BA tab? Where's the s44 tab? What about Maximum Annihilation and BOTA? Both are mods that I like...
I've been making the same point for years, and still you just don't get it... And people think I'M dumb.
You see what I did in SMU? A little 300x200 picture, and a short description and a download button. Would it be so hard to add something similar to SD(Oops, I mean CAD)? I keep all the mods in SMU updated so that just like CA, all you do is click the same link every single time, and you'll get the latest version.
Something so simple and helpful, yet you are completely unable to allow yourself to do it out of what? Pride? Don't make me laugh.
SD belongs in the installer as much as AF's semi-coherent rants do.
Now, if you could bring yourself to work with the rest of the community and expand upon the possibilities of CAD to something beyond that would benefit everyone, I wouldn't be against it as much. But, we both know that that isn't going to happen.
