Spring freezes after game start, screen flashes

Spring version: 0.80.5.2
Mods tested: BA 7.04, CA 6606
OS: Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP
Computer: Dell Vostro 1400
CPU: Core 2 Duo 1.4Ghz
GPU: Nvidia 8400M GS
Ubuntu Driver: 195.30 (beta) Windows: tested beta and stable

I've played spring in single player off and on for a while and never had any major problems. Today I decided to try and play online and have experienced multiple computer crashes. I managed to play one 3 vs 3 game of BA on Ubuntu that played fine. After that I downloaded the current stable build of CA 6606 and some different maps and it crashed. It would load up the game and would let me place my commander on the field but then the screen started flashing in a very seizure inducing way. I tried other maps and mods (including BA) but I got the same result on Ubuntu. I then booted into windows to try it and got the same result. I even download the portable version on Spring to see if that would make any difference but I got the same result. Sometimes Spring would crash so hard that even after a total shut down and restart I would still be getting graphical glitches or even no video display at all on my laptop. At one point I had to unplug the monitor from my laptop's motherboard and use an external display for me to boot into an OS without any problems.

All games, single or multi, now freeze in the first few seconds of the game and often will crash the OS. I've tried running it both full screen and in window mode.

When watching replays of games where spring freezes, the replay doesn't freeze but all of the animations stop completely.

Do you have any idea why this might be happening? Would uploading a file or replay help at all?

It appears I might have a defective GPU. I've started to notice this same issue in others games and also while watching flash videos on the web.

you have a mobile 8xxx series nvidia which indeed makes a gpu defect after 1-2 years of usage highly probable.
