Exporting from OTA to Spring

Post by Wolfword »

There is a page called www.unituniverse.com, there, a lot of programmers make every day new models of units for OTA. Only one question.

┬┐Is it posible to export these units to any spring mod (Or to the engine itself)?

The unit .fbi .3do and .cob are more or less 1-to-1 the same for spring, as are the weapon tdfs (some tags are redundant or behaviour different). Of course you need an actual mod to add the files into, rather than just adding in the units individually. The .gaf buildpic is useless, the .pcx F1 pic will be used as buildpic (iirc). Any custom .gaf textures will have to be exported to bmp, there was an OTA modding tool that does that but I forget which one (also the resulting .bmp textures need a 0 added to the filename iirc).

The real question is, why would anyone want to put a bunch of mixed up units into a spring mod (Speaking as someone who made OTA units in the past which are more than likely on unituniverse), unless they are infact a full OTA Total Conversion which is being ported to Spring. (And of course, most of the good ones have already been ported or remade for Spring. i.e. AATA/S44, SWTA/SWIW, GundamTA/GRTS. Though some like War At Sea, Dark Sun and Final Frontier seem to have dropped off the radar and might benefit from new conversions - but conversions will never match a full Spring remake). Even large unitpacks and rebalances like GMTA & all those crazy new ones with wacky scripts with upgrades and stuff that i forget the name of, are dubious. Hell even third party races are pretty pointless unless you combine them together to make a new mod. And if its just TA with new units - what is the point?

Most models look quite crappy, but this one looks awesome: http://www.unituniverse.com/?p=u&v=6326

That's because the buildpic is a resized Cavedog promo render of the Flash. I assure you the model itself is not the one depicted there.
