How to use my netbooks keyboard on my desktop?

Post by Beherith »

I really like the kb on my netbook, since its 95% full size and very easy on my hands.

I would like to use it as a keyboard on my desktop, anyone know how I could do this?

I thought of using vnc, but Im not sure how that would work out, since then I would have to have the mouse plugged into the netbook as well.

Both pcs are running win xp and are on LAN ofc.

synergy2, though simply using vnc and leaving it focused would allow you to still use the host mouse

If both machines run XP, you might as well use 'remote desktop' tool that comes standard with it. Should even work on Home Edition (not 100% sure on that), surely works on Professional.

On the main PC, enable remote desktop (My Computer - Properties - Remote - set the checkbox for Allow remote desktop access, this is NOT the same as remote assistant) and make sure there is at least 1 user with password (blank passwords might get rejected on remote logins). On the netbook, run mstsc.exe, enter your main machine address, log in using that user. That's it. In my experience this provides better remote control than vnc, since it's more integrated with OS. Plus you can 'share' local drives and other devices to the remote machine (Advanced button in mstsc.exe)

Edit: Now I see that's not what you wanted, since Remote Desktop on XP blanks the host machine screen and kicks out the locally logged on user, so you won't be able to use the mouse from it.

yeah synergy2 is the proper solution. Its free/OSS, works across linux/windows, easy to setup and configure how you like. It can make your 2 computers feel like one with a dual screen display.

I used to have it set so both screen edges rolled across on a double tap (easy enough to do, but not accidentally) so I could just sat my laptop down next to my desktop monitor on either side. There's some setting to stop either screen losing focus when you flick and then you can browse on one while you play games on the other without issues.
