The price discrepancy you refer to is $12, and virtually their entire product line is hackable.
I think they're just happy to be making money on what is essentially a pocket calculator with I/O ports and a transmitter.

If you've got a store and you're selling these routers, really you should offer a $10 service or something to install the custom firmware. It takes the (largely imaginary) risk out of having the customer install the firmware and brick their fancy new router. Heck, to eliminate that one in a hundred risk I'd probably pay $10.
What's important is, you're charging to INSTALL the firmware, not for the firmware itself.
Geek Squad would probably charge $90.

That and the old WRT-54Gs lasted a long time. I bought mine when the tech was new. It just died recently. Served me faithfully.
