Shattered Horizon

Post by Caydr »

This game is incredibly good and they're actually going to make DLC for it, not just announce DLC and make a sequel a year later.

Currently the game lacks voice support however it is the most-requested feature and the devs are actually being proper PC devs and actually adding things like that.

The premise is like this: the moon is colonized, people start mining, someone accidentally triggers a huge explosion deep under the moon, oh shit, the moon just exploded.

If you've ever watched Planetes, you realize this is a bad thing. It effectively prevents the launching of any further supplies from Earth, and in George Bush's third term he decides that the last shipment should be guns to protect the good blue-wearing astronauts from the evil, yellow-wearing astronauts. However as it happens the yellow-wearing astronauts have the most access to oxygen while the blue ones have most of the food and goodies, so the outcome is predictable.

Since there is no sound in space and FPS without sound is hard to make fun, you normally play with "simulated" sound. Apparently your suit contains an all-seeing eye that can simulate the sound of being knifed but not warn you about it beforehand. However you can also go into "silent running" mode, which makes you very difficult to spot, however takes away all the advantages of having your suit powered up - you move more sluggishly, you can't stick to a surface to steady your aim, and you only hear what's going on in your suit.

Pros: Fully realized outer-space conditions with guns. Zero gravity, you can move, turn, and roll in any direction. Nice graphics. Cheap.

Cons: There are currently only 4 maps but they can be played in any of three different styles and CTF is likely to be added. As I mentioned earlier, there are several content packs, with the first to be released soonish and containing 4 more maps. There is only ONE gun, however it also has a grenade launcher attached and can be used as a sniper rifle. You can also melee. Requires Steam and DX10.

Final Fantasy XIII had nicer movies. But wait, this was INGAME and actually resembles real gameplay.

Here's another one, but the first 30 seconds are a bit embellished. All assets are ingame though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd-2dZMDAGw

This is what silent running is like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4tpUcpy ... re=related

walking on the ceiling looks fun but it requires DX10 and windows 7, so yeah. maybe in 3 years.

I have a couple of passes to give out if anyone wants one. I'm not exactly sure what they actually GIVE you tbh, probably a trial period?

I can't look into it yet, but sounds interesting. Don't need a pass since I don't have the time at present.

I don't think my computer can run it (just too weak in the hardware department even though I have no idea why the game needs that much power). I'd like a demo or a pass to try it out (you can guess my Steam ID...) but I don't think it'll do much.

I got bored of this instantly

one gun, and it is instant hit. at least a tribes style disklauncher takes skill to use, this is just a matter of try not to fly into orbit while holding the crosshairs over someone. cool sound/atmosophere, but they forgot to put the game in

so its like a q3 space map with machine gun only?

i guess it depends on the leveldesign and how quick you die when hit.
sneaking around on a spacestation while the other dude is maybe just on the other side of the wall might be a lot of fun.

One or two shots to the head or air tank kill you, but the distances involved in fighting tend to be quite long, and sniping while not attached to a surface (and radar-visible) is nigh-impossible. Regular bullets don't do very much damage, it probably takes 10 hits or so to the chest to kill.

The rifle is actually more like 6 weapons: knife, machine gun, sniper rifle, and 3 types of grenade launcher. The different grenades are pretty cool, but none of them actually cause damage.

I'm not saying it's the game of the year, but it has four very large maps which are playable in thee different game modes with up to 32 people, and the best zero-gravity gameplay I've seen. At least four more on the way - though "three dlc packs" have been announced, and the first consists of four maps. Post-release support seems to be very good.

More importantly though, it's only $20 and isn't a Halo clone.
