Live Broadcasts
www.livestream.com
I came across this at TeamLiquid's website, they have a bunch of players/commentators who broadcast games/vods of Starcraft. I know our community is virtually non-existent compared to theirs but I still think it'd be cool if we had a couple people who did this when they were online. Or at least it'd be great for having a live, commentated stream for tournaments :D
You can download their Procaster and broadcast live video for free (with annoying ads of course).
I gave it a little test last night with Spring and it worked fairly well. One issue I had was I couldn't get it to work with TASClient (it hooks the TASClient process instead of the spring.exe process and as far as I can tell you can't manually specify which process to capture). It worked fine with SpringLobby though. Another issue is that you'll experience a little lag, as with any video capture software. On my computer its not something that'd I'd like to play against someone with, but maybe others who have faster computers could broadcast some first person streams of them playing :D
So anyways I'll be fooling around on it for a little while, my channel is www.livestream.com/stevezissouspring if anyone wants to check it out.
I encourage others to post their spring channel!

Re: Live Broadcasts
include it in the lobby, that would be ├╝ber awesome
Re: Live Broadcasts
Smoth made a few very educational livestreams, i look forward to seeing more of this type of thing. I may try hosting one when I get the time.

Just logged on to check it out, excellent!
Combine this with that widget (action finder?) and leave yourself in an autohost for super win.

Re: Live Broadcasts
I commentated a few games this afternoon, you can watch them from the channel by clicking the "On-Demand" button.
One thing to note for others who may try this is that you only get 10 GB/month of bandwidth unless you pay for premium. (this afternoon used up almost 7 GB)
I still hope to see some other people put up a channel!

Re: Live Broadcasts
Damn. Free plan is 10gb, Channel plan is $350/month for 25gb with all sorts of perks (like removed ads). Too bad they don't have a happy medium of like 25gb without any perks for a much lower price.

Re: Live Broadcasts
Yeah I think i misread the site earlier. It looks like the 10 GB limit is on storage only, says you can do unlimited streaming. So that's not so bad.
Re: Live Broadcasts
i just watched a guntank getting stuck on a cliff and fireing in the ground in front of it. INTERESSTING.
Seriously, a real video where the boring parts like alttabing to the lobby and whatnot are cut off would be far more interessting.

Re: Live Broadcasts
This is pretty cool
Teamliquid is famous. Also checkout SC2GG and DiggitySC's youtube channel if you like starcraft. The best english commentarys on the net imo.
If i had some more time i would have loved to do some commantarys like these as well. Is it hard to get that recording thingie to work?
Note that TheMightyOne and Error323 did something similar a year ago, and even more ppl did make commented replays. Were are you guys!?
Lot of ppl having an account there with 10GB/account should help. We can make an overview of them in here.

Re: Live Broadcasts
While not specific to gaming, there are at least two other services which would work for this (at least for specific matches): http://www.ustream.tv
and http://www.justin.tv - disclaimer, I don't know about the limit through these services, and at first glance livestream has a nicer site.
people broadcast games through these two fairly frequently. In order to make it work, you'd want to get a simple screen capture program (fraps works, alternatively camstudio is free/os (haven't tried it). there are loads of such programs though.
I think this is a really excellent idea - the trick will be to spam #main with the link as the game is starting so you can get 50+ people watching the 'big name' games (which in turn encourages more competitive play, because competitive people like being recognized for their awesomeness).

Re: Live Broadcasts
50+ people would be like 1/4 of #main...
There is not even a replay with that many downloads on replays.adune.nl
I would like to see commented live games but if ~5 people watch the stream "live" and everybody else just watches the recording of the stream then its better imo to skip the stream and make a normal commented video. This way there will be less "uumh err year errr" etc.
FRAPS is probally the best/easiest to use program because it also can record the gamesound and the microphone. (I think its called [x] use stero mix) Then just put the files created by fraps into moviemaker and voilá.
I found when using two softwares to record video & sound seperately, video and sound would go out of sync over time.
But what works well, is that you record the video and then while watching them play in VLC or whatever, comment on them. Advantage is you know what is going to happen. Fraps creates a number of videos (each 2 or 4 GB iirc) which are around ~4 minutes each so, you can just redo a part if you mess up saying something.

Not hard at all if you got the software and some GB of free diskspace. Use a lower resolution than you normally would play in so recording does not lag.If i had some more time i would have loved to do some commantarys like these as well. Is it hard to get that recording thingie to work?

Yeah, I'm not the best speaker and it's not something I'm doing consciously. But thanks for the advice, I will try to reduce that in the future :)
Re: Live Broadcasts
we all make mistakes man, we can always get better. Good to see you take criticism in stride so props for that.
Re: Live Broadcasts
I had fun watching the broadcast, and I think you did a good job of commenting it.
Re: Live Broadcasts
I'v opened a channel as well and hope to do some live broadcasts...
The only issue is that I need to spec and I prefer playing
