I paid people to play various packages on the engine for the purposes of social research. This isn't as legitimate, but...

Smoth: to my mind a bribe constitutes paying someone to break some rule or law in your favor. For highly competitive RTS players, switching games incurs a pretty huge cost in terms of time investment (becoming competitive at a game takes time, if it isn't brand new), so a monetary reward seems like a reasonable way to get them to consider making a switch, even if temporarily.

I think this is a pretty good idea to get competitive types to come out of the woodwork of the internet, particularly if you advertise it well and make the prize large enough to get noticed.

True nemo but big competitive tournaments are not really possible in spring. Way too easy to hack it. Add to that the fact that it is still unestablished so the tournament would be at best a few guys who are decent at s44. Then there is the fact that it very much is a WIP and that means players are not able to get a true competitive experience due to WIP balance and the fact that things are changing pretty often in a big way(new units etc)

Yan, somethings cannot be bought with money.

You wouldn't recognize a strong argument if it was penetrating you form behind.

I don't think the hacking would be an issue for the first tourney, and I'm waiting for a fairly stable version (no major balance changes for at least 3 months - fingers crossed that the next version is reasonable enough to fester for a while) of S44 to do any of this. However, your point about the established playerbase is well taken - right now any kind of cash prize tourney could be shortened by simply giving the money to Godde. I'm not sure how I'd work that out, but probably by setting up two brackets - one for experienced players, one for new players.

The reason I emphasize competitive players so much is that they're the ones who ultimately stick with a game over a long period of time. They're kind of the best hope S44 has for becoming a work that will still get playtime in ~5 years. Also, its just more fun as a dev to play against other good players than to noobstomp all the time.

Ouch

Don't worry Gota, I've got your back.

The only reason Smoth hasn't tried this strategy is he spent all his money on an iPhone and then bought all the furry mecha hentai apps.

Maybe what SA needs is a pro endorsement deal? I'll say I played it if you give me the $20.

Ok, sorry, I've got a troll-management problem, I've only actually played SA once and the music disoriented me so much I couldn't concentrate on what I was doing. I basically built a lot of artillery, which is uncharacteristically bad early-game strategy, even for me.

See what I did there? I trolled Smoth and Gota, but then I hit myself with an extended troll which evens things out.
