Taclub

Post by Griffith »

Hi, i wonder what is that forum
http://bbs.taclub.net/taclub/newTA/

It seems to be chinese or something like that. Is there a chinese spring community or a chinese server somewhere ? I watched old threads on the forum but that was not clear.

And look that, they invite us to talk to them ! They have special english foreign section.

So did anyone ask them yet if we could rip the models they used in that top-down shooter for Spring? This should have given the IP-free-wanting people wet dreams for months (or even years)...

These are not IP free, these are edited Cavedog models, or sometimes edited third party units, and so would actually have more IP attached: Cavedog IP, retired TA modder IP, taclub IP, ...

Also, we had a wealth of IP free models already available for years. (Argh's Nanoblobs, about all of KDR minimods, S44, EvoRTS, plenty of CA models, ...). Just people prefer ignoring them and reposting the same "Hey let's make a new IP free mod" threads over and over.

Wrong. You might be correct for the buildings & most of the ships which seem to be retextured 3dos (although it's hard to tell as I couldn't zoom in). Still especially the planes (which got by far the most attention) usually aren't just textured 3dos but new models plus there are some completely new units anyway...

This game popped up a couple of times here and sometimes someone said he'd try to contact them but then was never heard of again...

I thought it was obvious I made this comment towards the "OMG we need to redo the TA stuff for our mod" people...

Here some more impressions of the game (and its units):

EDIT:
Well ok it seems zwzsg was right about the IP-freeness. I didn't check the geometries yet but the textures only partially are remade. They tend to blend in OTA textures into their own work...

Hey Griffith? Can you do me a small favor? I made an English translation of Flight and Annihilation (v 0.4)'s manual some time ago. Sulbon/Honeyfox et al might want to know it exists. Oh, and please tell them that I'll check v. 0.6 and make another one, if gameplay has really changed. It's a neat project.

v0.4> Quick-Start Guide

1. About this Game
"Flight and Annihilation" is a game based on the well-known RTS "Total Annihilation", developed by a number of mainland Chinese fans.

Because the game uses resources from "Total Annihilation" and "Spring", we consider this to be a modification of those games.

2. Game Controls
Use the arrow keys to control your plane.
Z: fires main lasers.
X: fires missiles.
Left shift: Makes aircraft climb into the air, avoiding enemy fire. Your aircraft will not take damage while being used. Uses a small amount of energy per second used.
Number keys, 1-9: call reinforcements.
Space: calls all reinforcements at once. Very useful for boss battles.
Mouse: used to control the game's user interface.
Ctrl: skip through the mission dialog.

3. Gameplay
You have three important resources, shown with bars:

Health is represented by the red bar. When it reaches 0, you will lose the game.

Energy is represented by the blue bar, and is used to summon special attacks and to dodge enemy fire. It can be renewed by picking up powerups, and slowly recharges.

Metal is represented by the gray bar, and is used to summon reinforcements. Your flying army will typically do most of the damage; therefore it is very important to collect the gray metal powerups, to keep sending in reinforcements.

4. Other Notes
Open the \ Global \ Settings.txt file and edit the settings there to change the window resolution and to turn on full-screen mode.

5. Thanks
Main program: Sulbon
Script: Sulbon, Honeyfox
Art: Sulbon, Hangiy.A, Honeyfox
Text: Starmoon, Sulbon
"Total Annihilation" and its production group Cavedog.
"Total Annihilation" MOD: Absolute Annihilation. (models)
"Supreme Commander" and its production group Gas Powdered Games. (Music)
"TA: Spring" and its production team Clan SY. (Setting, creativity, art and a number of resources)
TACLUB: all the production staff of the distribution center.

You should note though that they did the key-mapping the ugly way and so it's not the same key every time but e.g. always the key which is "Z" for firing making the controls uncomfortable on keyboards where "Z" isn't next to "X"...

honeyfox i post your reply here it can be interesting for some people:

Do you have a dedicated server to play online ?

i donno actually. maybe there was a spring server before. but now, definitely no.

What version of spring do you use ? How many are you in your spring community ?

some of us play spring for single-player games only. some joins your official server, and so their version should be the latest. i dont know the total number of spring players. but sometimes you can see some chinese playing in the lobby, just few people though. most of us are still playing ota due to hardware requirement and some other reasons.

I posted your question in cdyjn's post. I don't think he his active but i tried. :-)

Thanks! I did my best, working from a Google translation.

That is terrible! Was the source code ever made available? Perhaps more programmers could be found, it was an excellent project.
