I have a tablet but nowhere to put it and thus do not use it. That was done with a mouse, and I admit that it is sometimes very difficult to get anything together with a mouse.

We use a few PL models, so it would fit with the others. However, we already have like 5 solar panel models and are only using 2 (1, in 1faction) so its not an ideal model to compete with the others (We're talking work from Cremuss and Azaremoth here).

If PL or anyone else ever wants to turn his 'sphere' units into a game or faction though it would fit the style.

In that case, I find it rather strange that the Arm still use the TA model :|
Wasn't the whole idea to use non-TA models when there's an alternative, as part of the "working towards being TA-IP free"? Or is that just for one faction?

Either way it's a nice model and even if it wasn't intentional it does fit well with the sphere-y-ness of many of the custom Arm models...

What, you take me for a fool!? :o

I think I know a triangularly pyramid-type thingy with the-whatsits-that-open when I see one, and that looks pretty Egyptian to me!

edit: I've played around with the edge hardness - reckon it's pretty good now. Also added the extend-o-fists. Hands are really fiddly

In today's lesson we learn that there's probably no point making the model even half that detailed, because nobody's going to see it that close up, and a lot of the detail can be faked using a well-made texture anyway

hehe, play some ba and build some solars. Then start up a game of ca and build some solars. if you can't tell the difference than :o

Anyway, I think your knight is coming along nicely, although i still don't like that pointy nose, and yes, a lot can be done with the texture.

just keep moving, get to the legs, it is good enough. you don't want to get too hung up on stuff.

Hips / buttocks need to be a bit more pronounced, arms look too long for proportions, shoulders are too wide. Also, at RTS distances, it's wise to exaggerate the feminine characteristics a bit, otherwise it will just look like a guy with hair. Look at Warcraft III / DoW female characters, they're fairly brimming over with... la diff├®rence.

Not necessarily in the sexist, chainmail-bra kinda way, but because otherwise, you just can't tell. Real women in real body armor tend to look like ugly men who can't shave yet, but it's a game, we want to know they're girls, even if they aren't half-naked Lesbian Moon Women, to mis-quote Zoombie.

Yeah, I know. The general design is pretty much the same though so I'm not sure if it can really qualify as "IP-free", even if it is a custom, and much higher detail model.

Oh yeah, and I fixed the nose - took one bevel and a less hardness tweaks :-)

Agreed - Blizzard used rather cartoony proportions for all their RTSs, and their units tend to be a lot more visually exciting than, say, Command and Conquer's.
The chest looks pretty buff. Reckon it needs to be a lot narrower at the top. I'd also cut the edges between shoulder and nipple and bring the resulting vertice down a little, if you see what I mean:

I generally use a heck of a lot of reference images, I had fists, torsos and arms from every angle - word to the wise though: don't type "fist bottom" into google images with safe search turned off
Pressure Line wrote:pentagonal prism for palm & fingers, and a deformed cube for the thumb. simple & effective
I generally just take a cube and fiddle with it: the head, body, 2 arm sections and fist were all made from 1 cube each. But you're right, I could probably do something that looks the same from an RTS perspective, is easier and uses less polygons (900 so far :? ) but I'm a bit of a "perfectionist", which is a nicer way of saying I have OCD :P

I'll probably get more "efficient" as I go along, which is a nicer way of saying lazy. It's quite possible that I'll distort and reuse the bust for example.

edit: Final horse-statue-golem-thingy:

Final polygon count is 1318 - considering this isn't going to be a spammable unit that should be okay I think. Then again optimisation is something I probably need to work on...

wilbefast: Wow. That is your first model? color me impressed.

KaiserJ: she has no boobies

More seriously though: In addition to larger/exaggerated proportions, the shins look a little thick along the z-axis. Kindof like she is wearing armored shinguards, and nothing else. The toes also could be a little more thinned/pointed to bring out the feminine side of her. Btw, how are you licensing your models? I would love to use some for my game.

looks good now get it in game.

since you are working free form without others influencing your artistic direction I suggest going ahead and getting the texture done and get it in game. worst comes to worst you can always make it an expensive unit later on to reduce how many of them are on screen.

hmmmm

haha when i was doing the model, she originally looked like the hottentot venus! (google it, its lulz, but i;d get tempbanned for posting it im sure)

so yeah. bigger ass, maybe a few more polies on the boobs (although i was sort of intending to make it like the top of one of those medieval gowns where the boobs are sort of flattened and poke out the top) and certainly the shoulders must be scaled back.

beyond that, i think my texturing will probably save it. or not.

part of the problem was that i was using a "how to paint and draw" art book for my proportions, when i really should have been looking at pr0n.

*edit @ maackey i dunno much about licences but you're more than welcome to any of my fantasy type models; i guess we'd just have to talk about the licence so you could explain it to me. i think i'd be cool with a "anyone can use it as long as they credit me somewhere" sort of licence.

anyways im planning on including a bunch of weapons and shields and suchforth with the model; so you might be able to scam maybe 5 or 6 different units from the one file, idk.*

Listen to Smoth - the first thing to remember: this is an RTS. You have to make a farktonne of units.

If a unit looks half decent, the correct response is NEXT!

Skin it and stick a fork in it, and make note of the criticisms for the next one.
