Review! Razer Exactmat

Post by Caydr »

I was on NCIX the other day, trying to find some toys to lighten my mood. You see, I've been a bit depressed lately. Even trolling hasn't done it for me.

So I go looking through their site, and eventually I come up with a few things I'd like to have:
-Razer Exactmat ($40 hahahaha)
-Wireless X360 controller for Windows ($60 hahahaha)
-Turtle Beach X41 wireless headset ($260 hahahaha)
-an assortment of eneloop AA/AAA batteries and a charger
-16 GB SDHC card
-Other things I don't need now that I have a car and I'm piss broke

I'll review some of the other things eventually.

The Exactmat isn't something I thought I'd need, especially at $40. Who can justify paying that much for a mousepad? But this one's a bit special, it's actually a medium-large aluminum plate with some texture applied. The top and bottom have different texture, which supposedly allows your mouse to move either very freely on one side or with a little resistance on the other side.

I can confirm that my mouse is, in fact, able to move on both sides with about the same amount of force, so that part's not really for real. But what's true is, it really does kick the crap out of a regular mousepad. My old mousepad (a colossal one about 2'x3') developed snags in the surface that irritated me whenever I'd go over one. My cat helped with the snag development, as well as the fur overcoat development. It's a snaggy, furry mess now.

The Exactmat is quite heavy and has four rubber feet on both sides that make it basically immobile on my desk, which I find VERY sexy. It doesn't move no matter what. Also, the surface being very hard means that my mouse slides over it VERY smoothly, so I can easily move my mouse exact distances in any direction without feeling like I have to overcome the resistance of the mousing surface before the mouse itself starts to move. For art work and FPS sniping in particular I've found this tremendously helpful.

So, at $40 I think it was actually worth it considering how much easier I can move the mouse precisely. Fortunately, since I bought the mouse at NCIX and they price-match anyone, I was able to save about $15. I also price-matched everything else I mentioned earlier, saving about $80 in total on my entire order. I used this money to finance the purchase of chocolate milk and the Battlefield 2 collection which is finally on Steam!

Also, I have a Microsoft Natural 6000 mouse. It's basically shaped like a large softball, cut in half, with a spot for your thumb to find traction. A really, really oddly-shaped mouse, but amazingly comfortable for non-gaming purposes (I have a G9 for that). The point of all this is, until I got the Exactmat I had very real difficulty moving the mouse small distances, it would like to jump 2-3 pixels at a time. For graphic work, this makes it useless. Pleased to say though that the problem is now 100% gone, so Razer's claims about it being more precise than a normal mousepad are very much accurate.

I highly doubt anything USB-powered could fire a rocket far enough and hard enough to be useful in any of my needs.
